20 years of PetRescue
Read more
Over the past two decades, PetRescue, our partners, collaborators and supporters have helped transform the landscape of animal welfare in Australia. Rescue pets went from invisible to irresistible, and adoption became a mainstream, celebrated choice. Along the way, six defining moments reshaped the sector - moments that revealed new challenges, sparked innovation, and inspired action. As we stand at another turning point, these stories trace the evolution of rescue and point the way toward a future where prevention, reunification, and compassion guide the path ahead.

Season 1: “Wow, I can’t believe this is a rescue pet”
Rescue pets were once seen as unwanted, broken, or damaged, but that perception shifted. Through positive public campaigns, rescue pets began to be celebrated, breaking the stereotype and showing that they are just as loving as any other pet. As public sentiment evolved, so too did the laws around pet shops and puppy farming, reflecting a growing recognition that every pet deserves a loving home.

Season 2: “Help, my adoption applications keep getting rejected”
As demand for rescue pets outstripped supply in most Australian states, eager adopters often faced repeated rejections. In a hyper-connected world, timely communication became essential. Households were still determined to find pets to love. With online breeders and unregulated marketplaces making it easier than ever to obtain pets, even as thousands of homeless pets still needed homes, this period highlighted the need for better systems to match pets with people efficiently. It led to initiatives like the MatchMakers project, which helped connect pets with loving homes quickly and responsibly.

Season 3: “We’re not kitten you”
Cats began to outnumber dogs listed for adoption on PetRescue, highlighting the need to reduce intake and promote kind, humane cat management strategies. Targeted desexing programs and research-driven approaches became vital to ensuring the welfare of urban stray cats. PetRescue united with the Australian Pet Welfare Foundation to support a science-led, four-year Urban Stray Cat Desexing Research Pilot - demonstrating how evidence-based programs can make a real difference for cats and their communities.

Season 4: “Some of these (rescues) are not like the others”
With the rise of unregulated digital marketplaces, scams became a real risk for both pets and people. PetRescue responded by introducing stronger safeguards and professional standards for member groups, including a code of conduct, complaints processes, ABN and vet reference checks, and compliance with state requirements. Additional measures such as monitoring online platforms, website and communications protections, listing reporting mechanism and anti-phishing strategies, help pet guardians navigate adoption safely and ensure pets are placed in caring, legitimate homes.

Season 5: “How a global pandemic gave rescue pets an alternative”
The pandemic created unprecedented challenges, but also opportunities to rethink support for pets and people. With fewer pets entering the system as adoption numbers soared (due to it being the perfect time to welcome pets home while more people were able to be at home), PetRescue was able to fast-track alternative pathways, including Remote Assisted Rehoming and Crisis Care programs. These initiatives ensured that pets could remain in loving homes, even during periods of uncertainty, strengthening the bond between pets and their people.

Season 6 (Now): “But you need help too”
Post-pandemic pressures, including rising living costs, have led to more calls for help from people with pets. Many of these pet guardians were struggling themselves, revealing gaps in support services. Initiatives such as People & Pets, the Foodbank Trial, and Crisis Support aim to bridge this gap, providing holistic assistance that helps keep pets and people together.
Next Season: The decade ahead
Looking ahead, PetRescue is harnessing over 20 years of data to identify pets at risk, understand pathways into the system, and measure outcomes of preventative programs.
