The Matchmakers project
A tech solution to connect more pets with adopters, faster
One of the biggest barriers to pet adoption we face today is the lack of response from rescue groups who are overworked and under resourced and often struggle to respond to all adoption enquiries. But we understand that when someone falls in love with a pet on PetRescue, and their enquiries go unanswered, it can be very disheartening. The solution is Matchmakers!
Undertaking our biggest piece of work since the PetRescue website was launched in 2004, we’re investing in technology to lighten the load for rescue organisations, improve the experience for all potential pet adopters and find the right home for pets faster. By drawing on our learnings from Carsales and Airbnb, we will develop a new adoption enquiry management system that’s faster, more efficient, more responsive and, most importantly, gets more rescue pets into loving homes.
Phase One - Mobile responsive website
In 2016, more than 60% of all traffic to the PetRescue website was via mobile devices. That’s more than two million Australians looking for a pet via mobile. However, the PetRescue mobile website was very basic and in desperate need of a rebuild. To ensure more rescue pets find their forever home quicker, we urgently needed to get rescue pets mobile by bringing all pet search functionality to the mobile website and rolling out a new app to both Apple and Android.
Thanks to your kind support, we raised enough funds to successfully achieve this by launching the new mobile responsive website, complete with improved pet search functionality, in May 2017.
Phase Two - Adopter profiles
Pet seekers will be able to create and save their own detailed online adopter profile, giving rescue groups, shelters and pounds all the essential information they need to quickly respond to adoption enquiries. This will also cut down on the need for adopters to complete endless adoption forms for every single pet enquiry, something we know turns many people away from rescue and towards other means of obtaining a pet.
Phase Three - Online enquiry management system
To further lighten the load for rescue organisations, and improve the experience for all potential pet adopters, our plan is to send rescue organisations instant notifications via email, SMS and a new PetRescue app (including a link to the potential adopter's profile) when new pet adoption enquiries are made online via PetRescue.
We’ll also give rescue staff the online tools to respond to enquiries quickly and easily, so that pets can move into their forever homes faster and carers can save another life sooner. And for unsuccessful enquirers who are still looking for “the one”, we’ll help them progress their search for a new family member.
