At PetRescue, we understand that supporting pets goes hand-in-hand with supporting the people who care for them. PetRescue’s Food & Product Donation Program helps distribute pet food and essential products where they’re needed most.
For two decades, the Food & Product Donation Program has continued to grow, extending vital help to PetRescue members and outreach organisations across Australia.
And we’re proud to announce a new pilot collaboration with Foodbank South Australia & Northern Territory. Together, we’re combining our strengths to extend our reach and leveraging Foodbank SA & NT’s expertise in warehousing and logistics to assist even more people and pets in need.
“Unfortunately, more than 300,000 South Australian and Northern Territorian households have experienced food insecurity in the last 12 months, with more than half of those households owning a pet. We know that pets play a significant role in supporting households in need and for many pet owners surrendering them is an absolute last resort. That’s why Foodbank SA & NT are proudly partnering with PetRescue. We look forward to distributing more pet food donations via the agencies we both work with and via our Foodbank Food Hubs."
-Greg Pattinson, CEO, Foodbank SA & NT.
Sarah Davies, General Manager at Foodbank SA & NT, goes on to explain about Foodbank SA & NT’s live-changing work;
“For households unable to put a meal on the table, this also impacts the ability to feed the pets they are guardians for, many South Aussies and Territorians advising they will feed their pet before feeding themselves.
Heartbreakingly, individuals and families are often forced to surrender their pets as a result. At Foodbank we understand that pets are an important part of the households and may be the only family member or companion some of our clients have. Access to donated pet goods and food in our Food Hubs and communities is vital for our pet guardians, it has such a positive impact on their lives.”
Foodbank’s work recognises the importance of the bond between pet guardians and their furry family members, particularly in those households experiencing need.
Below are some testimonials from donation recipients:
“I have meat-eating pets whose diet uses most of my grocery money but since shopping at Foodbank I'm able to buy groceries and pay my bills without as much struggling and borrowing as before I had access to Foodbank.”
“I am 55 and currently unemployed. I live alone and am struggling to pay for food for myself and my pets. I love you guys. You have provided me with the capacity to get food.. Without you guys, I would be going through bins.”
“I'm a mum of 4 young kids and I also have my teenage nephews come and live with me on and off. We also have 2 rescue dogs and a rescue cat as well. Without Foodbank we wouldn't be able to put food on the table or feed our pets. Foodbank for us is invaluable and we couldn't survive without it. The volunteers are always so friendly and helpful.”
By prioritising organisations with the greatest need, we ensure that communities where people and pets are most at risk are supported first. This initiative aids vulnerable communities, ensuring that both people and pets can receive the support they need when they need it.
How it works: simple, accessible support
PetRescue’s Food & Product Donation Program operates with a streamlined, 'always-on' model. This means that members and outreach organisations can request food and products as needed, simply by submitting a request form. We prioritise donations based on several factors, ensuring that help goes where it’s most urgently required.
Key considerations include:
-
Organisations assisting vulnerable or at-risk people and pets with limited local support
-
The urgency of demand at the time of the request
-
Active PetRescue members
-
The type and quantity of products available
-
Accessibility, delivery hub storage capacity, and location
By collaborating with Foodbank SA & NT, we’re making it easier than ever for organisations to get the supplies they need when they need them, helping pets and people in at-risk communities across Australia.
