About

Gumtree Greys' rescue and rehome greyhounds across the east coast of Australia, primarily from Gumtree (online classifieds), regional pounds and trainers/owners.

Adoption details

Dogs are pack animals and Greyhounds, in particular, are very familiar with being surrounded by other dogs in their racing kennel environment. For this reason, when left alone without people or other dogs for company, they can be prone to separation anxiety which can manifest in destructive and/or noisy behaviour. Yes, they may "grow out" of it after a few weeks in their new home, but why put the dog through that stress to ultimately live all day alone, while everyone is at work? As a result we do not rehome dogs into households where they are left on their own for more than 4 hours per day, without either people or another dog for company.

Contact Gumtree Greys via: 0402 616 964 OR gumtree.greys@gmail.com

Following your initial application, we conduct a home check. Our dogs are placed on a two week trial. The adoption fee is paid at time of placement and reimbursed if the trial is unsuccessful.

After the trial period is deemed successful, the adoption process is finalised.

  • “Jack” The Ripper Dog. Melbourne

    Greyhound

    All Round Good Looker!

We know it sounds corny, but Jack is a ripper! This boy has just the right amount of playfulness, handsomeness, and general adorableness to make him worthy of the nickname. Of course, there’s not a mean bone in his body, and he’s more a master cuddler than a master criminal. Jack’s hobbies include saying hello to people on the street, chattering his teeth when he’s getting a cuddle, or nibbling gently on his greyhound foster sister’s neck and licking her ears. Jack adores his walks, and currently gets two 20-30 minute walks a day (but could do even more, if you’re willing). He’s made great progress walking nicely on the lead and staying calm around loud noises, and is getting more confident around other dogs. Jack seems fine by himself with a treat to keep him busy, although so far he’s always had his foster sister there too. He could be ok as an only dog, but would also appreciate another large dog for company. He’s a tall, bouncy boy, so better for teenagers than young children, and not ok with cats. Jack’s relaxed indoors – and learning to use a doggy door – except when it’s dinner time, which is almost as exciting as going for a walk! Jack’s stunning to look at, with his Egyptian Pharoah "eyeliner" and tawny white-gold coat. His super-long snoot is extra-cute too, and his gentle face is always smiling. If you’re looking for all-round ripper of a dog, then Jack’s your boy. • “Missy & Spot”, Happiest Mother’s Day Ever. Bris

    Greyhound

    Our Love for Each Other

Missy and Spot are ready for adoption just in time for Mother’s Day, which is perfect because they’re mother and son! These two black beauties have a special bond, and although Missy is quick to keep Spot in line, they’re clearly devoted to each other. They’re the perfect ready-made family, and now just need some special humans to share the love and fun. Missy is pretty and petite, and still in good shape for her age, having recovered well from a nasty infection, with just some occasional older-lady grumpiness. Spot is tall and athletic, and particularly enjoys a good zoom around the garden. Both enjoy their daily walks, (despite getting themselves tangled), and their couches (they’re disappointed not to be allowed on the beds!) Spot is outgoing and loves everyone he meets, gravitating to the noisiest person in the room. Missy is more reserved and appreciates a quiet place to relax, although like Spot she has a fun-loving streak. Both are fine with hound-savvy children (six or over) and ok with other dogs who can handle their exuberance. Neither are tested with cats. Spot will charm you with his goofy enthusiasm, while Missy will win your heart with her spirit and individuality. Both will delight you with their good manners and intuitive ability to fit in with their humans. We can’t think of a better Mother’s Day present for Missy than to find a home with Spot – and the humans who adopt them will get the best gift of all! (Note: Missy is in the blue bandanna and Spot in brown). • “Echo”, Always There When You Call. Melbourne

    Greyhound

    I love to Hug!

Hellooo…ooo…ooo…there seems to be an Echo in here! There she is, a beautiful black girl with a few white smudges, ready to respond whenever you call. Echo loves all humans and is an enthusiastic hugger. She never says no to a pat on the head or a scratch under the chin, even from a stranger. Despite the troubles in her past, Echo has decided that humans are wonderful and would now like some of her very own. Echo would be best suited to a home with another dog, in particular a larger male. Cats and small animals are still too interesting – she even chases them in her sleep! Echo’s very well toilet trained – the only accidents have been from an upset tummy – and is learning simple commands like “stop”, “bed” and “no”. Like most greyhounds, she’s the perfect combination of gentle, energetic, elegant and silly, often sleeping with her tongue dangling adorably out of her mouth! With the level of energy this girl has, a house with a back yard is more her style than an apartment. Echo is curious about everything, and will follow your lead like her name suggests. This darling girl is calling out for a willing adopter – will you be the one to respond? • “Brice”, Perfect Gentleman. Melbourne

    Greyhound

    I'm a Perfect Gentleman

Brice is a darling middle-aged gentleman, with the remarkable calm and soulfulness that makes older dogs so lovable. His big amber eyes may be wizened with age, and he may not be as energetic as younger greyhounds, but his devotion to his people runs deeply. Brice is a sensitive soul and a sponge for cuddles, who can get a bit sooky if he doesn’t get enough attention. That said, he’s not demanding, and can be happy by himself for a while as long as he’s had a good walk, and has a nice comfy place to relax in. Brice enjoys a daily walk or two, preferring a gentlemanly stroll with lots of sniffing. He’s polite with other greyhounds and fine around children (six or over), although small dogs and cats are just too much for an older chap to bear. Brice is learning to come when called, and is still testing the boundaries of where he’s allowed to go, but a simple “uh-uh” or “on your mat” is enough to remind him of his manners. He’s in good health except for his worn-down teeth, which are no trouble as long as his food is soft or easily crumbled. Of course, a gentleman must have hobbies. Brice’s include carrying his food bowl around just for fun, and inserting his whole body into the garden for a fresh, all-over fragrance. This dear older boy will bring a spark of playfulness into his forever home, along with his wonderfully calming, charming presence. • "Blake", Mr Right. Melbourne

    Greyhound

    I have Soft Fur

It’s almost impossible to think of a reason not to adopt Blake. Ok, your favourite shoes might start to go missing, but rest assured you’ll get them back unharmed. Your groceries might get squashed as he bounces joyfully into your car, but that’s a small price to pay for such enthusiasm! And if he occasionally forgets to lift his leg while weeing…well, no-one’s perfect, but beautiful Blake comes pretty close. As for reasons to adopt Blake, where do we start? He has soft fur made for patting, is fairly small for a male greyhound, and has entertainingly unpredictable ears. He can sit & wait for his dinner, and bark when he needs to go outside (one bark means outside, two barks means he wants a cuddle). He lives happily with two other dogs, two children (over seven) and even a pet mouse! He doesn’t seem too interested in cats (he prefers watching the kangaroos go past the fence) but it’s too soon to say if he could live with one. Blake will be happy anywhere where a relaxed, obedient, and loving dog will be welcomed and made part of the family. If you’re looking for the Mr Right of greyhound adoption, we believe you’ve found him!
