Friends of the Pound Tweed Inc. was founded in May 2000 due to public concern for the many animals who generally, through no fault of their own, were being destroyed at Tweed Shire Council Pound. Over the years we have helped to make the Tweed Shire Pound one of the best in the country.
Friends of the Pound Tweed Inc. is a not-for-profit organisation whose aim is to re-home homeless dogs and cats in the Tweed area and to improve conditions at the Tweed Shire Council Pound.
Our volunteers provide much-needed assistance at the Pound - caring for the animals with feeding, grooming, exercising and giving comfort to those that are traumatised by the experience.
We work with the pound keepers to rescue animals in need of veterinary work, those who do not for some reason cope well in the pound and the few who aren’t sold from the pound. This co-operative relationship means that any animal that passes a vet check at the Tweed Pound will be re-homed either from the pound or by Friends of the Pound.
We also promote the importance of responsible pet ownership and slowly, but surely, hope to lessen the increasing number of homeless animals, particularly through encouraging the desexing of animals to reduce the appalling number of unwanted pets.
We provide discounted cat and dog desexing vouchers for residents in the Tweed Shire area who hold a Centrelink pension card or are earning under $50,000.
We are dependent on donations and the fund-raising efforts of our volunteers to augment money raised from animal sales.
We rely on a network of foster carers to look after our homeless cats and dogs and without their selfless work we would be unable to carry out our rehoming activities.
By adopting a foster or pound pet you will be rewarded with unconditional love and lifelong devotion - and you will also be saving a life.
We have Rehoming Centres for the cats at:
-17/39-41 Corporation Circuit, Tweed Heads South. Open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. Our Pre-loved clothing boutique is also at this address.

If there is a cat/dog you would be interested in adopting that you have seen online or met at our Adoption Centres, you will need to fill out an Expression of interest. You can do this at the Centres or online at: friendsofthepound.com/adoption-apply
We only adopt out cats and dogs to locations that are within 2 hours driving distance.
If you are a homeowner, we need a copy of your Rates Notice. If you have a Body Corp, we need their written permission that cat/dog ownership is allowed.
If you are in a rental we need written permission from the Home owner/Letting Agent. The letter needs to be dated within the last week and state the property address, the name of the Occupant (adopter-to-be) and how long you have been at the property.
We cannot accept deposits and no hold can be put on the cat/dog.
All adoptions need to be approved by our Cat, Kitten or Dog Coordinators or Management so you might not be able to adopt the cat or dog at the time you meet them.
We aim to match the cats/dogs with the most suitable owner and home environment. Our goal is to have the cats and dogs go to a home where they can spend their entire lives, which could be up to 20 years or more for a kitten. and 15-20 years for a puppy.
