Mother’s Day. A celebration of motherhood and everything that goes with it. We all love our mums, and like to show them we care. But spare a thought for rescue mums of the feline kind, who often struggle to find someone to care for them. After their babies are adopted into loving families, mother cats tend to spend a lot longer looking for a home of their own.
In order to give them a head-start, rescue groups across the country have been putting together some fantastic programs to encourage pet lovers to adopt a mum.
Forever Friends Animal Rescue (Victoria)
The crew at Forever Friends Animal Rescue in Victoria understand the important relationship a mum and her babies forge in their first few weeks and months together - this is why they’ve put together a promotion for Mother’s Day aimed at keeping the family together.
In order to find mumma cat a home, this rescue group are offering mum Nylah free when her kitten Poppy is adopted into a forever family. The duo are inseparable at their foster home, and splitting them up would be a real shame. In doing so, the team hope to promote adopting families, and ensure that mum cats aren’t overlooked at the shelter.
Saving Perth Animals From Euthanasia (SAFE Perth)
The team over at SAFE Perth have had a very busy few months - with more cats and kittens in their care than you can dangle a ribbon at, their Mother’s Day promotion aims to put mummy cats like Zara (right) in the spotlight.
SAFE Perth have opted to get adoptions flowing by lowering the adoption fee of all adult cats from $150 to $95 during the month of May - all the furry felines come fully vaccinated, microchipped and desexed also.
To keep the family together, and maintain the special bond a mum and her babies share, SAFE Perth are combining this promotion with a price-drop on kittens when you opt to adopt the mum.
This promotion will run until the end of May, so be sure to check out the full adoption listings from SAFE Perth on PetRescue and find your new feline mum and baby duo.
Wollongong Animal Rescue Network (WARN, NSW)
WARN have put together the ‘Purrfect Pensioner Program’ to help find homes for mum cats like Pasha (right).
By offering mother cats free to eligible pensioners, the program hopes to give a purpose to senior citizens who are looking for a companion.
This program is simply great, not just because the mums are able to find loving homes, but because cats make such great companions for older people. Their health benefits and typically low-maintenance nature makes them ideal snuggle buddies. Plus, included in the adoption is free desexing, vaccinations, microchipping and registration, so seniors aren’t swamped with costs.
This program is an on-going one, so if you or anyone you know is interested, be sure to head over to the WARN PetRescue profile and get all the information on the mums eligible for free adoption today!
RSPCA South Australia
The RSCPA in South Australia has been running a hugely successful campaign entitled ‘No Mum Left Behind’ since last year. The program is encouraging adopters to consider the special bond between a kitten and its mama. Adopters of kittens are given the option to take the mum home for free, under the tagline ‘Adopt the Baby. Get the Babysitter Free’.
The campaign was originally a kitten-season special, but proved to be such a resounding success that it's now running indefinitely at RSPCA SA.
Fetching Cats (NSW)
Here’s a very fetching Mother's Day adoption promotion from Fetching Cats, an initiative of Fetching Dogs Inc. They’re waiving the adoption fee for three amazing mama cats in their care who deserve to be in their new homes already. These girls are gorgeous inside and out and all have just a little bit of a cheeky side.
To ensure the best match, the usual adoption process still applies, and the promotion closes at midnight on Sunday 11th of May. So be quick to send in your enquiries about these adorable mamas to Fetching Dogs rescue group.
