Hi Members,
We know that you, as a member of the PetRescue community, already uphold a high standard of care and services in rescue. PetRescue members are recognised by the Australian public as trusted and reputable members of the rescue community.
But with the rise in popularity of rescue pets, Australia has seen an increase in adoption and donations scams, short-lived rescue ventures and individuals and organisations not doing right by the pets in their care, foster carers/volunteers and/or adopters.
While becoming a registered Australian business has always been a requirement of PetRescue members, we have accepted organisations without providing an ABN in the past. As the PetRescue community continues to grow, we are gradually transitioning to a point where all our members need to provide their ABN details. As of 1 January 2021 having an ABN linked to your organisation, will be a requirement for members of PetRescue.
Why an ABN?
An ABN helps verify members are:
-
Committed to setting up and running a rescue for the longer term
-
Aware of, and abide by their legal obligations when accepting payments and donations
-
Legally are who they say they are
-
Can be contacted if things go wrong
I don’t have an ABN
Registering for an ABN is straightforward. You have the option to register your ABN either:
- in the name of your organisation. For more information about what business category your rescue falls under and how to register, please see here at the ATO.
- as a sole trader using your Tax File Number. We then require your organisation to be linked an ASIC registered business (please note there will be a cost at this stage). For more information about what business category your rescue falls under and how to register, please see here at the ATO.
Exemptions may apply for existing members in regards to point 1 above. Please reah out to members@petrescue.org.au to discuss.
Additionally, some benefits of having a registered ABN include:
- Access to support and funding: Being registered opens the door to applying for grants, donations, sponsorships, and even discounts from suppliers. This means you can get more help with the financial load instead of carrying it all yourself.
- Reduced personal risk: It separates your personal finances from the rescue’s, which can protect you from liability and give you peace of mind.
- Building trust with adopters and supporters: People often feel more confident donating, adopting, or fostering when they know they’re dealing with a recognised and reputable organisation. This can help you rehome pets faster and gain stronger community backing.
- Tax and cost benefits: With an ABN, you can claim GST, and as a non-profit, you may be eligible for tax concessions, vet work subsidies, and discounts that ease your expenses.
- A stronger voice for animals: The more rescue groups that are formally set up, the more seriously the sector is taken by government, councils, and businesses - helping influence real change for pets everywhere.
