Three-legged legend Crumpet lives every dog’s dream ❤️️
Starting the search for a new BFF
When Sonya and her partner started the search for a rescue pet, they were living and working in Sydney, and like many folks in the big smoke, they had a dream to move out to a property with some acreage and lots of animals. Both of them had grown up with pets and had reached the point where they were ready to grow their family with a rescue dog.
They were looking for a dog they could take everywhere - on holidays and to cafes for pupperchinos, and who could live inside as part of the family. They also had a grumpy cat their new furry family member would need to get along with!
‘’We wanted to adopt a dog to join our family, and in doing so, we did not wish to pay a breeder. We wanted to provide a loving home for a pooch who hadn’t been given the right start to life.’’
Sonya jumped online to begin the search for her new best friend and quickly found the PetRescue website:
‘’I found that PetRescue offered the one-stop-shop for all of these beautiful animals needing a home.’’
After a couple of unsuccessful enquiries, Sonya came across teeny little three-legged pooch Crumpet, via Paws N Claws Rescue!
‘’There was this photo of Crumpet, with his beautiful face and eyes that said, I am unsure, but I am bright, and I want love.’’
Welcoming Crumpet into the family
At the time, Crumpet was living with a foster carer, Lisa. Sonya and her partner visited Lisa’s home to meet Crumpet to help him feel as comfortable as possible. Lisa brought Crumpet out the front, and they all sat on the driveway so the meeting wouldn’t be as overwhelming. He was a timid but brave boy, accepting their pats and not pulling away, and after a while, they were able to take him for a walk up the road.
‘’I was holding the lead, and I could not have been prouder of our little guy, he sniffed and doodled along on his three legs, and we thought, what a trooper! We all seemed to hit it off, and Lisa agreed to allow us our trial with Crumpet at home, but I already knew that this little guy was never going anywhere else except our family.’’
Unfortunately, Crumpet’s start to life was rough, and at first, this meant that he was spooked by new people and could be aggressive towards visitors to the home. This was a challenging time in his settling in period, but it turned out that he just needed lots of time and patience.
‘’We needed him to learn that life isn't bad and people aren't all bad, and that love does conquer fear. He fell in love with us very quickly, but it was time and love, building his trust and confidence that in the end has made every moment with our little man special.’’
Living the dream!
The year after the couple adopted Crumpet, they made their big dream a reality and now live on a property on the far South Coast of NSW! Their farm has sixteen cows, two horses, ten sheep, eighteen chickens, their cat, and of course, Crumpet. Their time is spent feeding cows, horses and chickens, gardening in their veggie patch, collecting eggs, walking from shed to shed and paddock to paddock, and fishing at the river - the dream life for lucky guy Crumpet!
Crumpet now enjoys the company of humans and loves pats. He’ll give anyone who stops patting him too soon the ‘’paw of demand’’, where he taps their leg or arm with his paw! He also loves to announce any visitors coming down the driveway.
When asked how their daily life has changed now that Crumpet is in their lives, Sonya says;
‘’The happiness level, the love, the companionship. Crumpet is always ready to jump in the car and travel anywhere with us. He’s also just as ready to snuggle on the couch or have a siesta on the bed! He doesn’t chase the chickens, in fact, when they’re having their afternoon seed, he’s generally right in amongst them, having a crunch down on a few seeds himself! He is my partner's right-hand man, and he is my best little guy. Our bright little spark just completes our family.’’
