When Phoebe decided she was ready to welcome a new canine companion into her heart and home, she had no idea just how far that journey would take her!
In 2020, she adopted Rune from RSPCA Warrnambool via the PetRescue website. What followed was the adventure of a lifetime spanning continents, full of healing, growth, and unbreakable bonds.
When asked about the start of her adoption journey, Phoebe shares, “I will always be an animal person, and I felt ready to help a new dog friend navigate the world.” Though Rune was younger and larger than Phoebe had originally envisioned, she instantly knew she was the one. “She is perfect,” Phoebe says.

From their first meeting, Rune made it clear she had chosen Phoebe as her human. “I remember when I went to meet her. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to get another dog yet. But she ran straight up to me and wouldn’t leave my side. We’ve been best friends ever since.”
Rune, arrived at her new home in a very stressed state, and needed to decompress after being at the shelter. But it didn’t take long for her to realise she was safe. “She slept for about a week,” Phoebe remembers. “At first, it was in the corner of the room. Then by my feet. And by the end of that week, she was curled up on the couch with me.”
Since then, Rune’s transformation has been huge, thanks to Phoebe’s dedication and love for her. Once timid and wary, Rune is now a confident, happy BFF to Phoebe who loves meeting new people and playing with other dogs. “My family say the change has been like night and day,” Phoebe says.
That growth came through patience, empathy, and mutual trust. “I’ve tried to give her space, encouragement, and validation to boost her to be the confident puppy she is now,” Phoebe explains. “She trusts me completely and knows I’ll always put her first.”

Today, Rune is living her best life in Washington State in the U.S., where she moved with Phoebe to live with Phoebe’s now husband. “Rune is now an international traveller!” Phoebe shares. “She’s been to several states in Australia and the U.S. - she even came to a wedding and has visited a WWII bunker!”
Since being adopted by Phoebe, Rune has been on plenty of epic adventures! She’s hiked forests, dashed across beaches, lounged in sunshine, swum in rivers, and curled up beside campfires. “We love going hiking and exploring together,” says Phoebe. “She’s even travelled by plane, train, boat, and bus - she’s amazing on the move.”

Rune has come a long way from a shy, uncertain dog to a confident, joyful BFF with dog and cat friends, a love for swimming, and an adventurous spirit. “With Rune, I really feel like she found me, and anybody who knows us would tell you that we just made for each other. Rune is always there for me when I am not well. She senses when I am sick and will curl up with me and wait out migraines with me, never wanting for anything. She trusts me completely and knows I will always put her first and will always be there for her.
Rune keeps me grounded, and she makes me laugh every day with her silly antics and zoomies and greyhound sleeping positions. People have said to me that she has wisdom in her eyes, that she looks like a majestic forest creature, like she has a video game quest for them and that she looks like she is always just about to say something. You can clearly see her thinking.
Rune made me step up my own self-care, and instigated some of the greatest adventures and hikes of my life. She keeps me on my toes and out in nature.” Phoebe shares.
