Ruby and Max’s story shows the incredible bond between pets and their people, and how the right support can keep families together 💚
Home2Home PetRescue’s assisted rehoming program is making a significant positive impact by supporting pet guardians with kindness throughout their pet rehoming journey, whether that’s helping find new loving homes for pets or supporting pet owners to keep their pets, which is, without a doubt, the most ideal outcome.
Ruby's journey with Home2Home began in September 2022 when she reached out, bravely sharing her struggles and her deep love for her dog, Max. Ruby faced her own challenges with depression and worsening arthritis, coupled with the prospect of relocating to a place where pets weren't allowed. Despite her immense love for Max, Ruby thought that she might not be able to provide him with the life he deserved in her current circumstances.
“Due to increased depression and worsening arthritis in my hands and feet, I am not able to give Max the life he deserves; I am going to be moving into a small unit that has no yard, and pets are not allowed. I love him very much, but I understand he is not getting what he deserves from me.” ~ Ruby
After the initial call with the Home2Home team, Ruby’s bond with Max was obvious.
‘Max sounds very happy in her home, and Ruby is heavily reliant on him for companionship and emotional support. Where possible, it would be great for Ruby’s welfare to keep Max with her.’
With compassion and understanding, the Home2Home team was there for Ruby every step of the way, offering guidance, encouragement, and a helping hand when she needed it most. Together, we explored alternatives to help Ruby navigate this emotional journey, like finding a dog walker to ensure Max got his daily exercise to take the pressure off when Ruby was having a particularly hard day.
Despite the challenges she faced, Ruby's determination and love for Max never wavered. Max's well-being was always at the front of her mind.
“I would really like to thank your team for understanding our situation and showing compassion for Max and myself. My support worker will help me go through all of your suggestions, and I am hoping for the most positive outcome. I can not thank you enough for the reassurance you gave me. I really want to try and keep Max with me and will give as much effort as I possibly can to do that. Thank you again for your understanding and non-judgmental guidance.” ~ Ruby
In March 2023, after thoughtful consideration and with heavy hearts, we progressed to the pre-listing stage, and eventually, Max's profile went live on PetRescue. It was a bittersweet moment, filled with hope and uncertainty.
As potential adopters came forward, Ruby grappled with conflicting emotions. But it was during a pivotal phone call with Home2Home that everything changed. Through heartfelt conversations and unwavering support, Ruby realised that the benefit of their bond was mutual. Max was not just a pet but a lifeline - a source of comfort and companionship during her darkest days. And Ruby was a wonderful, loving and caring guardian to Max.

With renewed determination and a sense of relief, Ruby decided to keep Max by her side. This was a testament to the strength of their bond and the profound impact of compassionate support.
“Max and I are good today, thank you for asking. After talking to Diana, I felt safer and less guilty. Please pass on my overwhelming thanks. She showed real understanding, and her guidance is so valuable. I extremely appreciate everything that you do to help both the dogs and the owners. Max is my lifeline. I love him very much and am so glad that I still have him in my life. The support, encouragement and advice I received from the Home2Home team really helped me. Thank you once again.” ~ Ruby
Today, Ruby and Max’s bond is stronger than ever. Their journey reminds us of the power of love and the importance of keeping families together, no matter the obstacles they face.
