When Madeleine and her husband lost one of their beloved dogs a few years ago, their home felt suddenly still. Their senior dog, Tinks, seemed lonely without her canine companion, and the house seemed too quiet without the extra four paws pattering around. That’s when Madeleine turned to the PetRescue website in search of a new friend. But not just any dog, she wanted to give a senior dog a second chance.
Enter Rex.
“I saw Old Man Rex on PetRescue, a charming boy that ticked all the boxes,” Madeleine says. “Fast forward a year later, and he and Tinks are best friends. He’s really come to life.”

And finding and connecting with him couldn’t have been easier. Madeleine found searching for and adopting Rex through the PetRescue website smooth and straightforward. She appreciated that she could easily find the right pet for her household (a senior doggo who would get along with other dogs and cats) and also give a rescue pet a great home that suited them.
“I found that PetRescue had great filtering options to ensure the pet was right for our household,” Madeleine says.
Adopting Rex from A Mini Rescue via PetRescue turned out to be a life-changing experience not just for him, but for all of Madeleine’s human and furry family. Living on a 50-acre property, Madeleine and her husband both work from home, sharing their home with lots of furry friends, including not just Tinks and Rex, but a young doggo named Suki, and four kitties who have also become BFFs with Rex!
“We spend a lot of our downtime exploring with the pups on lots of sniffy walks,” Madeleine says. “I find old dogs need just as much enrichment as puppies to keep their brains active. It’s been awesome watching Rex come to life and run and frolic. When we first adopted him, he was a bit overweight and slow, but he’s a power rocket now! He’s the dog I needed - I just didn’t know it at the time. He’s shown me what it’s like to have a soul dog.”
Giving a special senior pet a home in his twilight years has been the highlight of their journey. “There is nothing more rewarding than watching an older dog come to life once they find a safe and loving place,” she says.
Madeleine's experience highlights the life-changing transformation that happens when senior pets are given a loving and comfortable retirement home. Sadly, it takes adult dogs on PetRescue twice as long to receive an enquiry as puppies; however, older dogs like Rex have just as much love to give. And, as Madeleine points out, they often come with bonus perks: “Most of the time, all the training is done for you!” she says.
Rex adores cuddles, creek swims, and sniffaris through the bush, and has had a positive impact on the couple’s well-being and day-to-day life.
“Our lifestyle has a great work-life balance, and spending time with our beloved pets is a big part of that. Rex has made our lives better.”

Madeleine says to anyone thinking of adopting a big dog or senior dog (or both!);
“Do it! Big dogs are gentle giants - goofy and lovable, and I feel there is nothing more rewarding than watching an older dog come to life once they find a loving home.”
Now that he’s settled with his new family, this sweet senior boy is living his best life, proving that age is just a number, especially when there’s love, cuddles and adventure involved!
