Sometimes, the right pet comes at the right time. And sometimes it takes a while. But when the timing finally lines up, the connection you make can change everything. That’s what happened when Kira found her guardian, a journey that shows how powerful patience, compassion, and connection can be 💚
Kira came into care with Fetching Dogs from an Aboriginal community with her three puppies. She had cared for them, protected them, and nurtured them, and after giving so much for so long, it was time to find her a home where she would be loved.
Jane*, her soon-to-be guardian, had also been waiting for the right moment. “I have always loved dogs, but as an emergency services worker, long shifts and a lot of travel got in the way for a long time,” she says. Her search started in 2019, and with the pandemic getting in the way, she decided to foster while continuing her search, welcoming a small fluffy pup, Benji, into her home until he was adopted three weeks later. Even though Benji wasn't the dog for her, she still felt sad when he left.
The next morning, feeling a little lost, she got her daily PetRescue pet alert and found Kira. “The day I got the email… I submitted the application within 30 minutes, and about 45 minutes later, I got a call from a Fetching Dogs organiser!! The (PetRescue) website was very easy to use, filters were great, so good for a non-profit website!”
Fetching Dogs takes a careful and considered approach, recognising the importance of every dog as an individual and matching them to homes based on their personality, needs, and preferences 🐾
Kira had been collected by a council ranger with her three seven-month-old puppies. “Having worked in communities, and having looked after a number of camp dogs while I was there, I immediately felt like I had found my dog.”
At the meet and greet, Jane* remembers, “I fell in love immediately. From the email Thursday morning, by Monday afternoon, I had a dog!”
Kira adapted to city life quickly. Her calm and caring personality made her a natural fit for helping others. “I don’t even know where to start… Kira is my soul dog! We both had our own lives before we met with responsibilities; we’re both independent but incredibly loving.” Her guardian soon realised she could bring joy to others. “As soon as I met her, I thought she would make a good therapy dog. Once we had done some training, I applied for us to become a Delta Therapy Dog team, and as expected, she passed the assessment. We visit a residential aged-care facility each fortnight. She is very gentle with them, and they love seeing her. Watching them smile when they see her makes my day.”
Kira’s story is a reminder that things often happen at the right time. Both she and her guardian needed patience, persistence, and a little faith that the right match would come.
From her beginnings in a remote community to her life as a therapy dog, Kira shows how patience and connection can change lives. 💫
