Events are a powerful tool that all rehoming organisation’s should have in their toolkit. Done well, they put real pets in front of real people, and that changes everything. A wagging tail or a gentle headbutt from a cat in someone's arms has the potential to do more for adoption numbers than social media posts.
But the potential of events goes far beyond finding a single pet their forever home. The right event strategy can help your organisation build community, attract long-term supporters, recruit volunteers, raise funds, and shift the way the public thinks about adoption altogether.
What Events Can Do for You
Showcase available pets
Events give your adoptable pets a chance to shine outside the rescue environment. When people meet a pet in person- the connection happens naturally. Adoption enquiries made at live events often convert faster because the relationship has already started.
Educate on adoption
Many people still don't fully understand how rescue & rehoming works. Events are a brilliant opportunity to gently bust those myths, explaining the adoption process, sharing the stories behind your pets, and helping people understand that rescue pets make incredible companions. Every conversation is a chance to shift someone's perspective.
Promote your organisation
Visibility matters. The more your community sees your group out in the world- engaged, professional, and passionate- the more trust you build. Events help you grow your supporter base, attract new volunteers, and keep your organisation front of mind when people are ready to adopt, donate, or get involved.
The Different Kinds of Events Worth Pursuing
In-store and retail activation days
Partnering with a pet supply store or retailer for an in-store adoption day is a tried-and-true format and for good reason. The audience is already pet-interested, foot traffic is built in, and the setting feels relaxed and welcoming for both pets and potential adopters.
Corporate and workplace events
More and more businesses are looking for meaningful ways to engage their teams. Bringing rescue pets into a workplace- whether for a lunchtime information session or a "meet the rescues" afternoon- is a low-barrier, high-impact way to introduce people to adoption. These events can also open conversations about staff volunteering, corporate donation matching, and ongoing partnerships.
Collaborative fundraising events
Brands and businesses love unique experiences that also do good. A rescue presence at a product launch, community market, brand activation, or charity event adds warmth and purpose, and gives the business something genuinely feel-good to promote. These events raise funds and profile at the same time.
How PetRescue Connects You to Opportunities
PetRescue works to connect our members with our partners, supporters, and other businesses that reach out to us about hosting events. When a company or brand contacts us looking for rescue groups to collaborate with, we facilitate those introductions- helping match the right rescue with the right opportunity based on location, capacity, and fit.
This means our members get access to event opportunities they might never have found on their own. It's one of the ways we work to support not just individual members, but the broader rescue movement.
If you're a PetRescue member and want to be considered for these opportunities, make sure your profile is up to date and let us know you're open to events.
A Word on Valuing Your Organisation’s Time & Commitment
Here's something we feel strongly about: your organisation brings value to every event it attends and it's okay to ask to be paid for that.
Groups often show up to events as an afterthought, covering their own costs, contributing the pets, the carers, the equipment, and the time; while the hosting business gets all the feel-good benefit. We'd like to see that change.
We encourage all of our members to develop a simple model or process for event attendance. This doesn't have to be complicated, it might include:
-
A standard event enquiry form to capture the details upfront
-
A clear outline of what your organisation provides (pets, carers, setup, transport)
-
A suggested contribution or fee structure that covers your costs, and values your time
-
Conditions around animal welfare and suitability of the event environment
Together we can set a better standard for the whole sector by treating your participation as a professional service- because it is. Businesses that genuinely value rescue will respect it. And those who don't? That tells you something useful too.
Events done well are a genuine win-win: for your pets, for your organisation, and for the people and businesses who get to be part of something meaningful. We're here to help make more of them happen.
