Clear, appealing photos can make a world of difference for pets waiting to be adopted. But we know your teams are often working with whatever photos they can get, quick snaps, busy backgrounds, indoor lighting, or pets who just won’t sit still.
The good news? With simple AI tools, you can quickly replace a cluttered or dark background with something brighter, calmer and more inviting, helping to catch the attention of the thousands of people who visit PetRescue each day and letting each pet’s personality shine. And you don’t need design skills or fancy equipment to do it.
This short how-to guide walks you through how to change photo backgrounds using AI, plus tips for keeping pets looking natural and real!

Why background changes can help
A clean, well-lit and contextually appropriate background can:
-
Help adopters focus on the pet, not the setting
-
Create a sense of comfort and connection
-
Make pets appear more approachable and relaxed
-
Highlight what life might look like with that pet in your life
It’s not about making pets look “perfect”; it’s about giving them the best chance to catch someone's attention.

How to change backgrounds using Gemini
One simple option that the PetRescue team recommends is Gemini and their Nano Banana AI image tool. This tool lets you upload a photo and ask AI to replace the background while keeping the pet unchanged.
How to do it:
-
Go to Gemini.
-
Upload your pet photo.
-
Use a clear prompt that tells the AI exactly what should change and what shouldn’t.
Example prompts you can use
For dogs (outdoor style):
“Change the background in this image so the dog is on an Australian bush trail with natural light. Do not change anything about the dog, only the background.”
For dogs (home style):
“Change the background in this image so the dog is in a home, sitting on a dog bed with more natural light. Do not change anything about the dog, only the background.”
For cats:
“Change the background in this image so the cat is inside a house with natural light and on a cat tree. Do not change anything about the cat, only the background.”
After the image is generated, download it and upload your improved version to PetRescue.

Tips for creating natural-looking images
-
Authenticity is key. Keep it realistic, choose backgrounds an adopter would expect to see.
-
If the pet is sitting, lying or leaning, describe a background that supports that posture in your prompt.
-
Make sure shadows and light direction roughly match the original photo.
Better photos don’t just look good; they help pets connect with their new families. A few minutes spent improving a photo can mean more profile views, more genuine enquiries, and homes found faster.
