Feeding the good pets of Queensland
Community pets across Queensland received lots of love and food donations thanks to PetRescue’s partnership with Pedigree, Woolworths, and Mars Petcare for the Feed The Good Campaign.
PetRescue member groups and other supporting organisations rose to the occasion and worked together to distribute a whopping 31,000 kgs of pet food across Queensland to assist pet owners in need, animal rescue organisations, and animal managers supporting Indigenous communities.
The food was donated to nine different hubs across the state including Cairns, Cooktown, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Toowoomba, Biggenden, Townsville, Mareeba, and Hervey Bay.
SeaDog Vet Clinic, one of 19 organisations that received food from this drive, collaborated with Cook Shire Council to distribute their share of the $400,000 worth of food in the Shire of Cook area to help animal managers support local pets.
“The Animal Managers we work with at Cook Shire Council will ensure that all of the food received goes to dogs and cats in the community who need it most,” said Dr Duncan Smith from SeaDog Vet Clinic.
The food donations have been a huge source of relief for PetRescue member groups, and one of the best things about the Feed The Good initiative is that without the added cost of purchasing food for animals, rescue groups can reach out and help more vulnerable pets in their local communities.
“This wonderful donation means we won’t have to use our hard-earned fundraising money to buy food for the 100 or so cats and dogs we currently have in our care,” said Judy Whicker, Gladstone Animal Rescue Group president.
The PetRescue team coordinated these food donations through December and January in an effort to ensure that less fortunate pets wouldn’t have to leave their beloved homes because of financial strains.
Recipient member groups and community organisations included North Queensland Animal Rescue Inc, Adopt Me Kittens, Salvos Connect Community Service Centre, Atherton, Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre, Cairns Food Bank - Anglicare, SeaDog Vet and Cook Shire Council, Capricorn Animal Aid, Berserker Food Bank - Rockhampton Foodbank, Gladstone Animal Rescue Group, Brisbane Valley Cat Rescue, Best Friends Fur Ever Rescue, Off The Chain K9 Rescue Qld, Drought Dogs, Red Collar Rescue, Angel-Paws Inc, Hear No Evil, Animal Rescue Tablelands Inc, and Fraser Coast Animal Rescue.
PetRescue, Pedigree, and Woolworths kicked off the Feed the Good Campaign in 2018 to encourage shoppers to think about the less fortunate pets in Australia when they shop for their own. Each time shoppers buy Pedigree products from Woolworths, their reward points get translated into food donations for vulnerable and at-risk pets, with a target of donating $1 million worth of pet food across Australia.
