Be part of lifesaving research to make sure every cat counts
In most areas of Australia, statistics on cats entering the system are from pounds and large shelters only. These figures do not include cats cared for and rehomed by community rescue groups or vets.
Many cats never get counted in official data, and that means a lot of the work rescue groups undertake isn’t counted either. But we believe every cat counts, and that’s why PetRescue is working with the Australian Pet Welfare Foundation and the University of Queensland to collect data to inform lifesaving research into improving outcomes for cats.
As part of this research project, we’re implementing four new categories on the cat listing form to help identify where cats come from. This data will be included in an international publication on the current Australian intake of cats into shelters, pounds and rescue groups and their outcomes. This research will represent the most comprehensive data ever collected in Australia for intake and outcomes for cats, and will form the basis for recommendations to reduce intake and subsequent euthanasia of cats.
The data gathered is for analytical purposes only, and will be de-identified to ensure your privacy. The intake categories WILL NOT be visible to the public.
What are the intake categories?
The four main categories are:
- Community cat
- Owner surrender
- Council pound transfer
- Shelter transfer for specialised care
When listing cats, please select the most relevant intake option. It may not always be black and white, but please use your knowledge and experience to make the choice you believe to be the most accurate.
