About

Horse Rescue Australia Inc. is a non-profit organisation and registered charity, devoted to the care, rehabilitation and rehoming of horses that have been abused, abandoned or neglected. Horse Rescue Australia Inc. rescues from pounds, the RSPCA and Animal Welfare Australia. We also take on a limited number of horses surrendered by their legal owner, in cases where the horse is suffering neglect or abuse, or has been abandoned and has no one to provide care.
We do not rehome people's unwanted horses, however we will assist by listing them on our website.

Adoption details

To apply to adopt you must have previous experience with horses and be able to adequately house and care for the horse. Your level of experience must be suitable for the horse you wish to adopt. You must have another horse as a companion or a neighbour with horses to provide companionship.

Please contact us by email explaining your situation, and should your situation be suitable for the horse we will speak with you by phone to arrange for you to meet the horse. If the horse is able to be ridden we will also do a riding assessment.

Transport of the horse to your property is at your own cost, although we can help with arrangements.

Dot

Cleveland Bay Horse Mix

Stunning looking

Dot is a dark brown Cleveland Bay X Thoroughbred, around 16.2hh. She is a stunning looking, friendly mare, who is OK to catch, worm, farrier and handle. She can be a bit pushy at times and needs a firm hand on the ground. She is broken in, but hasn't been ridden for many years, so would possibly be best suited as a companion horse. Dot would need a very experienced horseperson.

Freckles

Pony

Loads of potential

Freckles is a 13hh roan pony in her early teens. She is quite friendly even though she has had minimal handling in the past. She behaved very well for her dental appointment. Freckles has had some training at HRA and can be caught and groomed but still has some fear issues with having her feet trimmed and being wormed. This has improved over time. Her new owner will need to continue to work with her on this. Freckles has had very limited time under saddle with a trainer but has proved very quiet when ridden. She is still a very inexperienced pony who will require a very experienced horseperson to gently work with her and bring her confidence along. She has the potential to become a lovely pony for an experienced child rider.

Standardbred

Friendly sweetheart

Velvet is a super friendly sweetheart. She is a brown standardbred mare, approximately 16hh. She is unbroken, but good to handle. Since coming to horse rescue she is loving living with a herd. She is not the prettiest girl in the world, but more than makes up for it with her lovely nature.

Pony

Looking for love

Eve is a 12hh chestnut pony in her early teens. She is a sweet girl who can be tricky to catch, but easy to handle. Eve has been backed but is extremely green and somewhat nervous. She would require a very experienced horseperson to take her training further. Even as a companion horse Eve wil require careful, patient handling.

Thoroughbred

Looking for love

Astrid raced in her younger days, but proved too slow, so she was surrendered to us. She's a striking bright chestnut, good looking gal, who is easy to catch and handle. Astrid had a riding assessment but due to a hip issue cannot be ridden. She is available as a companion horse only.
