About Oscar
DOUBLE MERLE BLIND
Oscar aka Ozzie, is a special little dude. He is a happy little lad, and very cuddly, can be independent with a little bit of spunk. He was the largest of the litter and has been a bit of a bully at times, but since being in care, he is learning that he is not the biggest and badest dude on the planet. He was given the name Oscar, as in Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street as he was always grumpy and telling his siblings he owned everything. This has all changed since coming into care, as he feels confident that his carer has his best interests at heart so he does not have to be so grumpy.
Ozzie loves a cuddle and snuggle into your chest or under your arm. Being blind he could easily fall into resource guarding behaviour if he feels that his humans are not protecting him or his food. It is up to his human family to ensure they advocate for Ozzie so that he does not turn into a braking and reactive dog. Remember he cannot see, so his reaction is to bark first and ask questions later. He is being taught to stay by the leg of his human if he is uncertain, so his humans need to let him know they always have his back. He is also being taught touch signals rather than the normal hand signals. He is being fostered in a family with 4 adult medium size dogs and is not phased at all. If you have resident dogs they must be calm enough to understand that he may bump into them or even walk over them from time to time. He has also helped his foster carer clean the chicken coop and enjoys following them around as they peck for seeds and bugs. He has even tried a little bit of the chicken pellets although they did not seem like good dog food to him. Ozzie is bi-laterally blind, meaning he has no sight in either eye. This will mean that initially he may bump into things until he maps out his environment and then there is no holding him back. To see him run you would never know he was blind.
Being a working breed, he is smart and needs both mental and physical stimulation to meet his needs and keep him happy and healthy (physically & mentally). He also needs to know it is ok, and there is a time to just relax and rest. Ozie is crate trained, which is crucial for him to have a safe place to sleep and relax, just switch off and rest for good mental health. He needs very clear and consistent rules and boundaries to be a well-behaved member of a family. If given an inch, he will take a mile and unwanted behaviours will start to creep in. It is important that any potential family is prepared to continue and put these things in place for him. Ozzie loves people and socialising with other dogs. He would love to be a part of an active family who will continue with his training and provide for his needs.
Is your family the right match for Ozzie and, is Ozzie right for your family?
