IMPORTANT: Sir Smokey must be a strictly indoor-only cat. Please don’t apply to adopt him if you intend to have him as an indoor/outdoor cat.
Are you after a very good looking but low maintenance kitty friend to join you for Netflix and chill sessions? A fur friend who won’t scratch your furniture or make a lot of noise? A sensitive new age kitty? Then this might be your guy!
Smokey is affectionately called “Sir Smokey” by his foster mama because he’s very regal looking. He also comes across as a kitty with an old soul.
Currently, Sir Smokey is still very timid with people he doesn’t know. His perfect forever family will understand this, and have plenty of patience with him until he’s ready to come out of his shell.
You’ll need to be confident and experienced with timid cats. Adopting this guy means going on a journey with him. He will be scared of you at first, but if you take the time to win his trust and keep his progress moving in the right direction, you’ll be rewarded with his undying love and affection.
Sir Smokey’s default setting is a very quiet, placid and mellow vibe who mostly enjoys sleeping, resting and food. He’s not there to entertain you with antics, but to be a loving and steady companion and brighten up your home with his beautiful eyes and sweet nature.
A retired street cat, we think Sir Smokey probably lived outside for a long time. He really didn’t think very much of humans when he first came into care. It’s been a long journey for him to learn that some humans are alright after all.
Sir Smokey was won over with treats, freshly cooked chicken and lots of grooming of his beautiful coat, which he absolutely loves.
He’s been showing his foster mama more and more of his personality lately, including a ritual of a very polite demand for head rubs first thing in the morning. He now also races to sit next to her whenever she sits on the couch!
Sir Smokey won’t hassle you for affection or food. Instead he waits patiently for his turn, and shows his appreciation in his expressive and beautiful eyes. He’s still learning about how good it can be to snuggle up with his human, but when encouraged, he LOVES a good snuggle-fest.
Ideally there would be someone at home most of the time, even once the pandemic is over. While he will never crowd you, he does feel more confident when there’s a kind human at home.
Sir Smokey currently lives with two resident kitties in his foster home, and while he likes their company he is not especially buddy-buddy with other cats. So he would suit a home either as a solo cat (getting all the love and attention) or with another placid kitty friend.
We don’t know how he’d go with dogs, and probably wouldn’t suit a home with small children as they would be scary for him.

Medical notes
Smokey has tested positive for FIV but has no symptoms. As a result he must be strictly an indoor-only cat. FIV+ cats can live with non-FIV+ cats (Smokey currently lives with two other cats in his foster home).
Studies have found that FIV+ cats often outlive their FIV- friends.
http://www.catchat.org/fiv.html "A ten-year FIV Monitoring Project was carried out at Glasgow Veterinary School involving 26 cats and the results indicated that a higher percentage of FIV negative cats died during the period of the study than FIV positive cats, and that FIV infection did not affect the cats' life expectancy.
You can also find more information here: http://fivcats.com/FIV/fiv_mixed_households.html
Dr Diane D. Addie (Lecturer in Veterinary Virology, University of Glasgow) said "at least 3 studies in FIV positive cats have shown a life span equal to uninfected cats."
A fourteen year study by Maureen Hutchison B.Sc, BVMS, MRCVS (veterinary adviser to the Cat Action Trust) found that FIV-positive cats are more likely to die by being killed in road accidents or to be alive and well into their twilight years than they are to die from any FIV related condition."
