About Bernard
Bernard came into care severely malnourished and neglected. Little is known about his circumstances or background but he has been gauged at being about 2 years old (although he’s still very much a puppy at heart!) - possibly Labrador/Bull Arab/Great Dane. He is now a fit, healthy, dopey BIG boy who thrives on love and attention and in return is SUPER affectionate and attentive.
Bernard loves to follow you wherever you go; adores constant tummy rubs and is obsessed with food. He has learnt many things since he has been in foster care – not to pee inside, to walk well on a lead (although will pull to smell all the interesting things along the way), to sit without command before crossing a road on a walk; to sit and wait before being given the okay at meal times and not to jump up regardless of how excited he is to see you (well most of the time anyway!) -ignoring him is the key here until he has 4 paws on the ground.
At night Bernard is happiest curled up on his bed close to his people while they eat dinner or watch TV - if he can see and hear you he’s happy! At bedtime he has learnt that before he can settle for the night he has to go out and have a pee. Sometimes he likes to have a big run around the garden before returning to his bed inside where he will settle until you get up in the morning.
Bernard would best be suited to a home where there is someone home during the day as he does get bored when left on his own. He won’t bark or try to escape but he will try and help with repotting tasks, un-stuffing cushions or taking the washing off the line for you. He needs to be left with toys that mentally stimulate him but even then there’s no guarantee he won’t make his own fun.
Bernard would love to be with you wherever you are so for that reason he would make an excellent companion for someone that works from home where he can curl up at your feet while you work or maybe someone who is able to take him to work with them –with a bit of extra training he should be great! A young active couple who love to be outdoors a lot would be perfect!
He’s great with cats – his feline foster brother has had no problems aside from Bernard occasionally wanting to play but has backed off happily when the answer has been “no”!
Bernard can be a little shy of strangers but will become their best friend once he’s had a good pat and a bit of attention. He’s good with children but would not be suited to really little ones due to his size and strength and moments of excitability!
He is friendly and gentle towards other dogs(sometimes he can be a bit hesitant at first) and his favourite thing to do is visit a dog beach and play with other dogs (once he’s had a good sniff!) followed by a swim in the surf.
He’s an amazing car companion too – no matter where you go he’s happy to just go for a ride …. If the journey becomes a bit long he’ll simply curl up and go to sleep.
So if you’re looking for a gentle giant with loads of personality and so much love to give then Bernard would be perfect for you!
Adoption details
Please go to the website http://www.rescuealabrador.com/
to submit an adoption application. Please click on the adopt a dog link on the left hand side of the screen and complete the questions if you are interested in adopting aLabrador.
We will not discuss specific dogs with you until you have completed this questionnaire as this allows us to establish which dogs are potential matches for your lifestyle.
Once we have found a suitable match to your family, we will allow you to contact the appropriate foster carer who will discuss the dog in more detail with you.
Once you are both satisfied that this is a good match you will be able to meet the Lab. If all goes well, you will be able to take the dog on a 2 week trial. You will complete the adoption paperwork and pay the adoption fee at this stage.
At the end of the 2 week trial you will be able to adopt the Lab and we will submit the microchip transfer to the council.
