Ideal Owner
Olive likes to have people who can dote on her.
Lagottos were duck retrieving dogs, and more recently trained in truffle hunting and true to breed, water and digging give her a huge amount of pleasure. It is important that she has an area she can dig as it would be futile to try and stop her. Thankfully she tends to dig in one allocated area and does not tend to destroy the garden indiscriminately.
Olive has lots of personality which makes her a great companion. She is fun, smart and learns quickly. She loves to be around people but is not needy or clingy. She is gorgeous looking and gives you wonderful expressions when you talk to her. She's friendly with other people and dogs but not over the top. She loves to lay on the couch with you and she sometimes snores which is very cute.
Olive does not need to be the only permanent dog in the home but as she will not seek its company (only people) she will not suit homes looking for a playmate or baby sitter for their current dog.
Doesn't mind if you're out for the day, especially if you leave a tricky food puzzle and is very happy to see you when you get home. However, she would prefer folks that don't work full time.
As Olive is people orientated she needs to be part of family activities.
She will not suit homes with residents that are very young, frail, elderly, renters or time poor.
Tolerance to Being Alone During the Day
Will alert to something strange but is not currently a nuisance barker. Food - barks for meals. Entry - will bark to come in or go out.
Olive will suit any of the following:
- someone home more often than not,
- part time workers,
- active retirees,
- full time workers (9am-5pm) as long as Olive is a central focus when home.
While Olive is fine without people during the day she prefers company.
Likes, Dislikes, Fears, Endearments and Quirks
She loves balls, food, swimming, digging, food and rides in the car.
Doesn't like thunder and won't chase her ball if there are faster dogs around.
Olive likes to have people around but isn't clingy - she's rather independent and won't get under your feet.
She doesn't mind kids but isn't drawn to them, apart from stealing food that they are slow to eat.
Olive is very food orientated. She also loves to swim - it gives her great joy to swim after sticks and balls (it's her favourite exercise).
She would love a big yard or little farm with places for her to trundle around sniffing and digging without upsetting the garden bed!
Olive is very strong willed and gets obsessive about food and tennis balls.
Exercise Requirements
Medium - playful and moderately active (can miss a daily walk).
Olive seems to need the mental stimulation of playtime more than the actual physical exertion. A short walk or throw of the ball keeps her happy. She loves the smells and interest of a walk or park visit
When ON a lead ...
Like most dogs she starts off pulling but settles. Olive is very strong.
When OFF a lead ...
Usually stays close by and comes when called but after she is finished sniffing.
Type of Yard Required
Large interesting and secure. As she has a genetic tendency to dig she will suit a big yard or small acreage where people are not precious about their garden - although she does tend to dig in allocated areas.
Grooming
Olive has an amazing coat of curls, but it does come with responsibility. If you don’t have the time for weekly grooming and clipping a few times a year you should consider another breed. Olive also needs to have the fur plucked from her ears quarterly and this sometimes requires sedation.

______________________________________
We strongly recommend you read the profile carefully where everything we know about the dog/s is outlined.
If you are interested in a dog we invite you to submit an application form so we can learn more about your circumstances. This is to ensure we match the right dog to the best home. (one form per family - not per dog) https://www.dogadoption.org.au/expression-of-interest---adoption.html
This is for the benefit of both the dog and the potential new owner(s). It also saves time and uses limited resources more effectively.
Once the essential criteria is confirmed we put you in touch with the carer for a more detailed chat with a view of meeting the dog(s).
If you decide to proceed with the adoption we make a time for a house check.
The adoption fee is then paid (there is a 2 week cooling off period.) Please note we offer a 2 week cooling off period but do not usually allow trials. See here for the difference https://www.dogadoption.org.au/can-my-dogs-new-owner-have-a-trial-period-before-deciding-to-adopt.html
Foster carers are also able to adopt foster dogs once approved.
