About Maverick
This giant bundle of love is Maverick. He’s a 5-year-old Great Dane that very regretfully needs to find a new forever home. It’s been just Maverick and his dad, always. We are looking for a patient home to help Mav work through the change that he will no doubt find tricky.
Over the last month Maverick has come leaps and bounds as we’ve worked with a wonderful home that we all wanted to work out. Mav got the confidence to leave the home with the new friends (without his dad), which was a huge accomplishment. He walked beautifully for them on lead with their dog but sadly their dog just wasn’t accepting of Mav no matter how many meets we did.
Maverick has lived a life of luxury, inside on soft but supportive beds, all the best food, endless love, and his dad by his side almost 100% of the time. He is a beautifully mannered boy in the home and an absolute pleasure to be around.
Mav isn’t fan of being on his own and to make this transition easier for him, we are looking for a home that has someone home much more of the time than not. Mav is starting to show his age and whilst a daily walk is a must, he’s not up for huge walks or an over the top level of activity. City life is what Mav is used to but a rural property with the right set up may be a lovely retirement home for him. He’d need to be contained inside the home when left but while his people are home, he’d have no interest in going anywhere.
It's been many years since Mav has taken a car ride and it’s going to be a new challenge for him to master hopping in. We know with some patience and persuasion he’ll soon realise the car is a magical transporter to fun and adventure as all dogs do.
When out and about, Mav does well but can be a little unsure of some dogs if they come too close which can result in a reaction. Someone who can learn to read him should have no issue dealing with these situations and helping him to make a different choice at such times. In recent years he’s not had time off lead as his owner’s sight has declined making it too difficult to manage.
Maverick has never lived with other dogs but does have some long-time doggy friends who come for visits and sleep overs. We would consider the right dog as a companion for Mav. Certainly not a crazy puppy but a little more mature easy-going friend could work well.
Children have not been a part of Mav’s life and he can be a little nervous at times, so a home with children would not be suitable. He is untested with cats and other small animals.
When people come to the home, he is quite protective and has a deep scary bark. It can take Mav a little while to warm up and get comfortable with new guests.
While Maverick shows what can be interpreted as big brave and courageous behaviour on occasion, he’s the biggest, most sensitive, softest giant teddy bear you could ever meet. He really is a lover and lives to adore his human and soak up affection.
