At 18, Willow is living proof that senior cats aren’t just full of love, they’re full of wisdom, adventure, and joy. It’s no wonder that stories and books celebrating the quiet magic of cats are so popular right now, because Willow shows, in real life, exactly what a senior pet can teach you about love, patience, and living in the moment 🧘
When Hailey and Tyrone lost their beloved cat Rosie (also found through PetRescue) at 11, Tyrone said,
“No more cats!”
Hailey knew it wasn’t because Tyrone didn’t want another cat, but because he was heartbroken too, and they had planned to travel more and enjoy semi-retirement. Hailey had grown up with cats and thought she’d have a quick look on PetRescue when she discovered 14-year-old Willow, who was in care with The Kitten Carer.
“I thought how lovely to give an older cat a loving home for his final years so I managed to convince (nag) Tyrone to get him,” she laughs.

Willow is thriving at 18, full of personality, determined, and completely deaf. They call him ‘Williewoo’ but also other names (we won’t disclose here) depending on the hour 😂
Over the years, Willow has shown Hailey and Tyrone just how much a senior cat can teach about life, love, patience, and laughter.
Here are Willow’s nine life lessons
1. Be present: a reminder to slow down and focus on the moment 🧘
“He teaches me to be present (he pats me on the face when I am on my phone mindlessly scrolling!),” Hailey says, “he forces me to think of others and not just myself.”

2. Love is the best medicine: know when comfort is needed 💚
“He comforted me when I had a knee replacement and was in a lot of pain, and he comforted Tyrone when he lost his dad last year. He is such a snuggle bug.”

3. Speak your truth: live authentically - loud, proud, and unapologetic 📢
“He is such a character, the loud yeeeellllllwwwwwllllling at 3am.”

4. Be yourself: let your personality shine ✨
“He joins Zoom calls, eats like a horse and is such a tart. When we leave him with friends who house-sit, they send photos of him loving up on them!”

5. Find joy in the weird stuff: Senior pets come with unexpected quirks 💫
“His latest senior habit is joining us in the shower. He waits at one end while we shower, then laps up the water after! He has access to plenty of fresh water, so god knows why he likes this, but we make it rain for him when he tells us that is what he wants! Yes, he is spoilt!”

6. Find comfort in the little things: delight in the everyday 🌻
“Willow loves to snuggle. We watch The Dog House on TV together, but he doesn’t like violent things like Peaky Blinders. He sleeps a lot now, enjoying lazing around on our picnic area and celebrating his milestones.”

7. Embrace change: new adventures can come at any age 🐾
“He leapt out of the cage, walked around the house checking out every room and then promptly plonked himself on our bed that evening and started grooming himself. I woke up to him licking my face and hair! He clearly decided we were his people!”
8. Connect with nature: let curiosity extend beyond the house 🌿
“He even goes outside on a lead and travels with us, exploring trees, gardens, and new places.”

9. Treasure every moment: appreciate each day 💕
“There are so many beautiful cats waiting for a chance to see out their life with love. People may think of the negative - illness/vet bills, having to say goodbye sooner rather than later…. but the benefits far outweigh all of that. Senior cats will generally not rip your furniture apart and have so much love to give!”
And Tyrone? The once “no more cats” dad is now completely smitten and has embraced being a cat dad 🐱👨
“Willow has fallen hard for Tyrone and stares at him in the same way I look at Harry Styles photos. And Tyrone adores him," Hailey laughs. "When he comes home from a hard day’s work, the first thing he does (before kissing his wife i.e. me), he looks for Willie and gives him a hug. True love.”

From his quiet wisdom to his big personality, Willow proves that senior cats have so much to give! Taking a page from his book, we’re reminded to open our hearts to senior pets, who bring more than companionship - they bring love, laughter, weird quirks, and the kind of life lessons that only age can teach.
