When you adopt a pet through PetRescue, 100% of the adoption fee goes directly to the rescue organisation, shelter, council facility or veterinary clinic caring for that pet. PetRescue is a free platform for adopters and member organisations, and we don’t take a portion of adoption fees.
The organisation caring for the pet sets the adoption fee. PetRescue does not set individual adoption fees.
So where does the adoption fee actually go?
Before a pet is ready for adoption, they need essential veterinary care such as a health check, vaccinations, microchipping and desexing. On top of this are everyday costs like food, flea and worm treatment, bedding and any medical care needed while they are in care.
These costs are typically paid upfront by the organisation caring for the pet. Many rescue organisations are small, volunteer-led groups working with limited resources, so adoption fees help them recover some of these costs and continue caring for more pets.
For some pets at council facilities that don’t have their own rehoming programs, a rescue organisation can provide a pathway into care and towards a new home.
Why do adoption fees vary?
Based on PetRescue platform data from 2025, the median adoption fee is approximately $250 for cats and $600 for dogs.
Fees vary depending on the pet and their circumstances. Some pets may have a lower adoption fee or be offered for a donation, while others may have a higher fee.
This variation helps rescue organisations balance the cost of care across the pets they support. A pet with significant medical or behavioural needs may cost thousands of dollars to care for, while another pet may require less treatment.
By adjusting adoption fees across different adoptions, organisations can help offset these costs and continue supporting pets who need extra time, care or treatment.
Is adopting a pet good value?
Adoption can be a cost-effective way to welcome a pet into your life, particularly because rescue pets are typically desexed, microchipped and vaccinated before adoption, with these initial veterinary costs covered by the organisation caring for them.
The value goes beyond the adoption fee, too. Reputable rescue organisations can provide information about the pet’s history, needs and personality, as well as support as you settle into life together.
The practical value is real, and your adoption fee also helps the organisation continue caring for other pets.
