Bringing companionship to those who need it most.
PetRescue is proud to be working on the Senior Citizens and Shy Cats pilot program in partnership with a newly-forming foundation with a strong interest in the human-animal bond.
This innovative program was first launched in November 2017, with the purpose of helping to match senior (human) citizens with shy adult cats, offering a reduced $25 adoption fee (with a $50 subsidy to the rescue group), and providing a pet helpline to follow up with cat adopters via phone over a 10-month period.
During this time, we’ve been closely monitoring interest in the program, adoptions and pet retention rates, identifying potential areas of support for pet owners, and gauging the overall success of the program.
So far, 107 rescue groups have registered to participate, listing an all-time total of 631 shy cats for adoption at the reduced $25 adoption fee. The dedicated Helpdesk and Helpline received enquiries from 158 potential adopters and helped to connect many of these with shy cats looking for a home. Some of the successful adopters also went on to share their happy adoption stories with us, including Lily & Angie and Judy & Tiger.
We’re thrilled to announce that the sponsoring foundation has chosen to fund the program for another six months, giving us the opportunity to reach more pet-loving seniors and provide vital adoption support to more vulnerable adopters.
Why Shy Cats & Senior Citizens make a perfect match
Shy cats struggle more than most to find homes, but the rewards they bring their adopters are often far greater than for those adopting a confident kitty. What often starts off as a slow burn will, over time and with patience, develop into deep and lasting love.
We think senior citizens are perfectly placed to offer shy cats the time, patience and love they need to blossom. We also believe that the special love a shy cat brings will be an invaluable addition to a seniors’ life.
