When Danielle set out to adopt a dog, she knew she wanted to give a loving home to senior pets. What she didn’t expect was how much two little dogs would change her and her partner Jeremy’s life.
During the 2021 lockdown, she was browsing the PetRescue website when she came across bonded ten-year-olds Zeke and Ruby, who were in the care of Dog Rescue Newcastle.
“I just knew I wanted to adopt multiple seniors and dove right in with an application on the PetRescue website,” she recalls. “I’m SO GLAD I was successful in this case; they are the absolute lights of our world.”

A fresh start for Zeke and Ruby
Since arriving at Danielle and her partner Jeremy’s house, Zeke and Ruby’s days are filled with love, snuggles, and a collection of cozy beds scattered around the apartment!
“They’re still so spritely and LOVE their walks,” Danielle shares. “We’ve accepted that Zeke will forever be a fussy eater, while Ruby is the little ‘garbage guts’ of the family. And if napping were an Olympic sport, they’d be dueling for gold and silver!”
Zeke and Ruby are now approaching their 14th birthdays - which is equivalent to 100 in human years. Danielle and Jeremy are both turning 40 this year, leading them to plan a grand 280th birthday celebration for the whole family!

The power of unconditional love
Looking back at their original PetRescue photos, Danielle finds it hard to recognise the sad little dogs she first saw. “I know them as such happy, cheeky, content pups, and we are absolutely committed to them having the best and most comfortable twilight years they could ever hope for.”
While the reality of loving senior pets means having less time together, Danielle and Jeremy have embraced their new mission of providing a loving retirement home to as many senior pets as possible.
“Whenever I get sad about knowing I won’t have as much time with them as I would if we’d gone down the puppy route, I remind myself that these two snuggle-bugs are just the start of our mission to give as many seniors the happiest lives they could hope for. We know one day the pain will be unbearable, but we have chosen this so that they never have to be alone again.”

The perfect retirement home
For anyone considering adopting a senior pet, Danielle’s advice is simple: “JUST GO FOR IT! These two sleep so much of the day and require much less attention than younger dogs do. They are still so spritely when they are awake and make the very best chill little companions.”
She also believes that adopting a bonded pair was one of the best decisions the couple has made. “The best thing about a bonded pair is knowing they have each other - especially when settling into a new home. We really wanted them to feel safe and loved right away, and bringing them both in together helped with that. Their little personalities started to shine right away!”

Zeke and Ruby’s impact
Danielle and Jeremy cherish every moment with Zeke and Ruby, whether it’s taking them on walks, going for car rides, or indulging in their favourite activities. For Zeke, nothing beats sleeping on their laps, with Ruby enjoying trying yummy new foods.
After nearly four years together, Danielle couldn’t be more grateful to have the pair in her life. “Zeke and Ruby have shown us just how much love we can give and how much we are willing to sacrifice to protect them. They have enriched our lives more than we can quantify.”
Zeke and Ruby’s story is a special one that demonstrates the incredible bond that forms when love knows no age.
