20 years of PetRescue

We've come such a long way together over these past two decades. Rescue pets went from being invisible and undesirable to becoming adored, loved and cherished - just as they deserve to be! Today, pet adoption is a mainstream and popular option. And pets are now very much considered part of the family.
When we look back at how far we have come, we identified six notable moments that changed the shape of the challenges the sector faced. These were crucial forks in the road that have become defining moments for pets in Australia.
This sector once again stands at a defining crossroads, a moment that will be remembered for how we chose to show up for pets in need and for one another.
The number of homeless and at-risk pets will continue to climb until we, together, do something disruptive at the systems level to prevent them from becoming a statistic.
While we will continue to find a loving home for every pet that needs one, the rescue community is full and desperate for respite. If things continue on this path, we will hit a ceiling, and there simply won’t be enough homes for every pet. This is too heartbreaking to imagine. But it is inevitable if no proactive action is taken.
We can't adopt our way out of this crisis, but we can make bold, long-lasting change that keeps them safe from harm.
Fewer pets entering the system means better outcomes for more pets, their people, the rescue community, and the entire sector. That's why, for the next decade, we are dedicating our efforts deeply and intentionally to prevention alongside adoption; helping to find ways to keep people and their pets together through support, reunification, and programs that provide alternative pathways to keep pets out of the rescue system.
Because there's no place like home.
