Travelling with pets can be heaps of fun, especially when they get to be a part of those aesthetic travel selfies! Being a nation of pet lovers, it’s no surprise that Australians love holidaying with their pets. In fact, according to the “Pet Parent Report” by PETstock, 47% of pet owners book holidays based on their pets!
With pet-friendly services hitting the mainstream, now it’s easier to find accommodation, food and transport options for you and your fur pal.
With extra prep and planning, pets can be comfortable and enjoy their new adventures.
How to prepare your pet for the trip
Like you, your pet needs a little prep before a long trip. Here are some tips for setting them up for success:
🧳 Pack a suitcase - Bring a few essentials for your fur friend. Pack extra poop bags, food, medication, a first-aid kit, long and short leashes, travel crates, enrichment toys and a water bowl. If your pet is prone to travel or motion sickness, keep pet-friendly ginger chews and extra paper towels.
🚘 Test Drives - A few test runs can help iron out any potential problems your pet may have with long drives. Maybe take an extra couple of spins around the block to help get them used to being in the car for longer.
🩺 Book a vet visit - A vet visit is always recommended before the trip, especially if your pet has any underlying health issues. Make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date and ask your vet to prescribe medication for car sickness.
🔎 Scope out all the vets on your route - Keep a list of contactable vet clinics that fall on your route, just in case. Alternatively, ensure you have a vet available for a phone consult for emergencies.
🐾 Ensure your pet is microchipped - Regardless of whether you’re taking them on a trip or not, it’s important to microchip your pet to keep them safe.
🧭 Invest in a GPS tracker - This is handy for day-to-day as well. If you can, get a GPS tracker for your pet’s collar to ensure that you’re aware of their whereabouts at all times.
🍔 Don’t feed your dog just before the trip - Avoid any heavy meals before you set off. It might be a good idea to take them for a long walk just before so that they are relaxed and have already relieved themselves.
