Sooty

Sooty is a rare and magical beast. He came into Maggie's Rescue care via some very caring and dedicated train drivers from the light rail depot in Randwick. All the way back in 2020, they noticed Sooty didn't seem to have a home - in fact he was left behind when his owners moved away and despite trying to contact them via his microchip, they did not come for him. Thanks to the team at the rail depot, he was fed and cared for since then and when they reached out to Maggie's Rescue earlier this year in the hopes of finding this sweet guy a better life in a home, we couldn't say no.

We were not prepared for what we found after his first vet visit - Sooty is a medical marvel and the vets do not know how he has survived this long, let alone living on the streets for years!!
Sooty has a rare condition by which a hole in his diaphragm has allowed some of his intestines to migrate and reside inside his chest cavity. Given his age, it is likely that Sooty was born with this condition, although it is rare to see a cat living so successfully with it long term. The impact is that he had a very reduced lung capacity as his guts take up the space they would usually breathe into.

Sooty is still living his best life in foster care currently although his forever home will need to keep in mind that he does have some special care that he requires - mainly keeping him relatively quiet and inside only life (no zoomies, big play or outside access), giving him small frequent meals and monitoring his breathing.

While living with this condition for this long is a medical marvel, It is unknown whether Sooty will live to his fullest years or not and depends on whether his condition is stable or may progress over time.

Sooty is a quiet and calm boy with gorgeous emerald eyes. One of life's observers - Sooty is slowly learning to chirrup and meow! He absolutely adores being brushed and scratched on the head, but isn't a fan of being picked up at this stage. Sooty is a sweet and affectionate feelow who loves to follow his people around from room to room.

He's really such a wonderful companion cat. His lucky new family is sure to fall in love with him straight away!

Like all Maggie's pets, Sooty is microchipped, desexed and vaccinated.

MY IDEAL HOME: I'd love to live in a peaceful home with an adult human/s. Life on the streets wasn't always easy, so loud noises and sudden movements still sometimes scare me.

I'm very outgoing and like to be around people, although I don't mind being on my own for the day (getting up to secret cat business!).

I did have a family back in the olden days, so I'm litter trained and a very clean boy.

MY ENERGY LEVEL: Due to my medical condition, I need to be kept in a calm home without a lot of action. Luckily Sooty is a chiller, spending most of his days lounging around looking for sunny spots. He's not much of an explorer so you don't you have to worry about him jumping up onto your kitchen bench or bookshelves! He's purrfectly content down at couch level.

MY SUITABILITY TO CHILDREN: Given my medical needs, a home with adults or older kids that don't get me too rowdy would be best.

MY SUITABILITY TO CATS AND DOGS: Due to my medical condition, I'm best as an only pet or with other relaxed or elderly cats or dogs might work.
