About Obi
Looking for an active family friendly doggo??
Obi is drawn to kids of all sizes and seeks out children at the park as he loves being involved in their excitement whether it be kicking the footy, playing with sticks or playing a game of chase
We can picture Obi with an adventurous child hanging out together exploring their world side by side.
Obi is a great medium sized family dog. t He has the floppy ears and the beagle-like tail which curves around but he is a Heeler x what are not sure what with.
For a 12 month old this boy is fabulous, a quick learner, eager to please and full of energy. Obi is an affectionate guy who loves his cuddles and will lie in your arms like an baby while you scratch his tummy
Obi has been fostered in a family with two other dogs as well as kids aged 4 and up.
Initially it took a day or two for him to learn his place in the pack as he came into the joint like he owned the place but soon learnt who was who. He enjoys the company of the active big dog to chase and do zoomies with, the grumpy matriarch, he stays away from so we feel he possibly can live with other dogs if well socialized. He’s a jovial little dude who likes to explore, play and have fun in daily life. He is a cheeky little munchkin who will be a great asset to an active family.

Favorite things
Obi being a young dude loves everything, food, cuddles, toys and walks. He chases the ball or rope toys thrown for him, plays tug o war, enjoys a splash in the small pool or down the creek to cool off and oh! if you have food or treats he loves those too.
Human interactions
Obi is an affectionate snuggle bug. Definitely enjoys pats and attention but not overly needy. As he is still a young boy he can be a little mouthy but stops with a firm no.
He has spent time at a home with children as young as 4 and adapted very well. He can jump up but this is not excessive, easily stopped with sit command.
Interactions with other animals
Initially showed quite a bit of dominance and reactivity but soon learnt who’s who in the pack. He has displayed a friendly demeanor to dogs on his walks, initially showed a bit of barking on the lead but with some training has learnt the word leave with a treat reward and that behavior has stopped but new owners will need to continue this boy's training to keep him in line. As with all dogs, slow introductions are a must and Obi has been reasonably polite, sometimes in dog's faces as he bounds over to say hello. This boy has great potential to be a well socialized boy as long as his new family continues to interact with him regularly with other dogs. He would benefit from regular interactions with dogs he’s familiar with as he does need to keep up his socialization skills
Obi can be reactive to dogs he feels uncomfortable and unfamiliar with. He also is best suited to being around quieter smaller groups of dogs more than big groups of overly excited dogs
Obedience
This boy knows how to sit and drop very well. He does a bit little bounce down into the drop position
He is being taught to sit if he wants a pat and mastered it well. If he’s overly excited when you arrive home he can be a bit jumpy but generally very well behaved. He is being taught wait for food and at the front door before walk which he is mastering well
He is displaying excellent recall for a treat when he’s off lead at the oval with his pals ( better than the resident dogs) but if there is another dog he can get distracted but is learning leave
He does like a good game of chase and can be a bit rough and barky in this type of play. He is put back on lead if he’s too over the top. Group dog obedience would be an excellent way to continue this boys training
Hygiene and toileting
Obi has a soft, easy to care for coat. Obi is fully toilet trained and currently has access to a doggy
Sleeping
Obi currently sleeps on his mat in the lounge room. He soothes himself off to sleep by sucking his blanket and has done this since a young pup. He has his special blanket he likes to have in bed with him
Independence
Obi for his age is quite independent. He spends time outside on his own and with others and does very well. He will join in with barking and sometimes barks at his mate to engage in play. He will initially bark when his carer leaves for work but this does settle and he will entertain himself with toys and chews. He will bark if other dogs next door bark at him. He likes entertaining himself with multiple toys in the backyard. Inside he is happy to hang where you are. He’s not an overly needy boy but does like cuddles if you are willing. We do seek a home where he will be an inside dog and interact with his family when home.
Exercise
Obi is an active boy and needs lots of stimulation so he walks daily for at least half an hour. He walks in areas where he can run and stretch his legs. He enjoys exploring bushy areas with his resident fur brother
Daily exercise is important
He thrives from playing with his humans either ball throwing, chase, tug o war, he always likes to keep busy and is often seen carrying something around in his mouth whether it be a ball, sock or soft toy. He does like to pluck all the fluff out of soft toys
He will not be suited to a small yard as will get bored, he needs an stimulating environment where he can sniff and explore
He would make a great running pal for a keen runner or hiker has he has energy to burn
Travel
Obi eagerly jumps in and out of the car. He has daily trips in the car to the park. Travels well secured in the back with no barking
Food
Obi is perfect at sitting and waiting for food
He takes treat’s gently
Obi is fed dry food twice a day. Has shown no reactivity to other dogs when eating but will try and steal their food so is therefore fed separately. His favorite chew is a cow hoof, apple or bone which keeps him busy
He is treat oriented which has been useful in training
Inside the home
Obi is reasonably well behaved inside but active. He will jump on the couch for a sleep and is learning the word mat. He has not been destructive inside but will chew his toys apart so as still being a pup things do need to be put away out of his reach just in case.
He does have one quirky habit and that is sucking his blanket
Ideal home
An active family and suitable with children above 5 as long as they are dog savvy
A home with a reasonable size backyard, not suited to a small backyard or apartment living
A home where he will be included as part of the family
A family who is prepared to continue his training and socialization
An active family committed to exercising daily
Home without cats preferably as he hasn’t been tested
A owner with previous dog experience is required preferably use to active breeds
Obi will be best suited as an only dog with a handler that is committed to his ongoing socialization training as in the right hands he will become a great boy with others
