Toto - 1 Year Old Terrier X (Trial 28/9/23)

It’s not hard to work out how he got his name. At just over 5kg, little Toto is a delightful buzz of energy.

Toto is initially very timid and unsure of both humans and dogs, but once he feels confident his personality shines and becomes the most lovable, totally adorable little pooch. He bounds like a little bunny when he runs and loves to play with other dogs he’s familiar with. He likes playing one-on-one with doggy friends, sometimes even a trio, but any more and he becomes overwhelmed and anxious.

He has some endearing little quirks – like taking items from the doggy toybox (stealth-like) and stockpiling them in his ‘special spot’ behind the couch.

Toto is doing excellent with his toilet training and he is crate trained. He nearly always sleeps through the night without a peep – on the occasional night he’ll bark out: “may I go to the toilet please” during the night and then back to sleep again in the crate until morning.

He’s a snuggly character who loves a pat and belly rub, but also needs a good level of exercise. He definitely sleeps more solidly at night after a long walk or two during the day!

You won’t need a doorbell with Toto around – he has sharp senses and tells his humans when there is someone at or approaching the door. He doesn’t bark incessantly, but he takes his role of head of house security very seriously and sometimes gets carried away and needs encouragement to stop.

For a little guy who’s never had any training, he goes alright. He walks pretty well on the lead and mostly does as he’s told. He clearly understands the word “no” when he’s doing something he shouldn’t. Using a doggy door on the other side of the house without being shown demonstrates he is a clever, resourceful guy. Being young, a commitment to basic manners training is a must and will guide him in the right direction as he matures.

Since being in care, Toto has barely been left unattended, so he hasn’t been tested for long periods on his own. He seems to thrive with human and doggy company. He has not been tested with cats, birds or other pets.

We think Toto will be best placed in a calm house, preferably with another smallish and/or submissive doggy sibling. His ideal home would be:
- where humans are home more often than not, and have time to commit to my training and provide lots of love and attention
- with the company of just one other friendly, playful and non-aggressive dog (he gets a bit overwhelmed with more than one; and lonely on his own)
- a calm and stress-free home
- a home that is stable and permanent
- a home with no small children
- where he gets at least one good outing and exercise session, plus regular doggy social time
- a yard to have a little run that is 100% escape-proof for a little dog who is good at slipping through gaps

Toto is in foster care in Mayfield, NSW. He is available for local adoption only. Toto’s adoption fee is $700. He is desexed, vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms and microchipped.
