√ older child friendly
√ dog friendly - with slow introductions
? untested with cats
* 5-6ft Fences
Dougal is a very special boy with many supporters rooting for his happily ever after. Living most his life on a heavy chain, every experience since being rescued is a new one, to feel loved and safe for in the world. Since his time in kennels and foster care, Dougal has evolved into such a well mannered placid boy who loves to be around his people.
Dougal loves:
* Walks and runs - beach, parks, local running 5kms in 31 minutes
* Car rides - head out the window enjoying new sights and smells (doesn't bark)
* Emergency sirens - howling along, we join in too
* Bum scratches - these tickle and get him started to play or unwind
* Lounging / snoozing - either on his beds, or baking in the sun outside
* People - very friendly once introduced, will go in for more pats
* Treats - food, pats and affirmation driven, he's very trainable
* Tricks - sit, stay, shake, high 5, drop, roll, up, touch, come, kisses, where is ball?, go get it, leave it (drop the ball), gentle
He is fully house trained, WON'T chew clothes, shoes, pillows or anything other than his toys. Dougal lets out verbal queues (whimpers) when wanting to go outside / inside, or like an alarm clock, to say its walk time now. He is a great watch dog, letting you know someone is close to the house - his barking is never excessive and stops once you engage with him to check the coast is clear.
Work in progress:
* Can pull on lead if you allow it, he loves to stop and sniff, currently using a Halti gentle leader - very excited walker here
* Dog socialisation - He will be vocal seeing other dogs as this is all still new to Dougal, slow introduction works best
* Recall - On long lead without distractions he is super, with a lot going on around he's very curious
* Jump scares - If he sees for example, a bike coming in front he's fine, but when a bike comes from behind without notice he will react
* Little children - the spontaneous outbursts do frighten him, until he's familiar with a child, his (happy) tail wags can hurt little one too
* Medium to large calm dogs - with slow introduction
Dougal is great at entertaining himself - he throws his rope ball up and catches it, slapping it side to side. When he's done, he will lay on his bed that's closest to you. He has no separation issues and can be left alone while you're at work. He plays happily with his toys in the yard, or soaks up the sun rolling on the grass, no complaints from neighbours about barking (unless a stranger approaches the gate), and he'll jumps with joy when you return home.
Dougal needs:
• Fences: 5-6ft. He's never tried to escape, but he can jump high and does repeatedly on the spot, to say hello to the neighbours next door.
• Company: He loves being involved in all you do, he's curious, a gentle reminder to sit on his bed while your getting ready or cooking works well. Remember to say goodbye and make the farewell ritual consistent so he knows your heading out.
In summary Dougal is a great all-rounder, whose eyes light up to the little things that make life great.. With the mannerisms of a saint, we have not found any reason to correct any behaviour other than dog etiquette.
If you would like to arrange a meet and greet, send in an application for Dougal.
