About Reg
We are now taking expressions of interest for this special needs boy. Reg was surrendered to us from a loving family, but because of his special needs they did not have the resources to give him enough time and training.
Reg is a young Dachshund and has been profoundly deaf from birth, so has to rely on his eyesight and nose to provide him with all the joys of life. Dachshunds belong to the hound family, they were badger hounds.
“Lively, alert, comic, and kind, the Dachshund is a companion who may be short of leg but is not short of personality. He is still a talented hunter the world over, and those instincts are clearly visible in his love of digging and chasing after backyard prey. When threatened or suspicious, he is a great protector of his family, whom he loves”
Reg has learnt some self-stimulating behaviours such as barking, digging holes and chasing shadows etc. More info on this if you send an expression of interest.
Reg is an affectionate cuddly boy who loves to be with his people and curl up on your lap. He walks nicely on lead and loves a walk. He is good with other dogs and cats, was raised with children and is house-trained and uses a doggy door. He sleeps in bed with his foster carers. He is good in the car and loves his food. He is not frightened by loud noises!
Although Reg is generally good with dogs he does get aggressive over food. So unless you are able to keep all food and dogs separate we suggest an only dog home may be best. Also young active children may not be ideal as their activity levels tend to over-excite Reg.
Reg (Sir Reginald Longbottom) is an intelligent dog and is responding well to hand signals which he learns quickly. He is gradually learning that he gets corrected for barking, and praised for being quiet. We have been crate training with some progress, but that needs more work. With more hand signal training and a rich stimulating home environment Reggie is starting to settle down to become a very good companion. And yes we do talk to him because he picks up on our body language and facial expressions.
His new people will need to have plenty of time and energy to dedicate to Reg. They will need a secure yard. He must not be left alone for a working day or any longer than a few hours as he may revert to self stimulating behaviours. So a retired person/couple or someone who works from home with or without older sensible children is Reg’s ideal home. Also a lot of steps / jumping is not a good idea for Dachshunds as they can be susceptible to back injury.
For more information on Reg please submit an expression of interest via email.
Medical notes
Reg is profoundly deaf.
