About Grizzly
Introducing little Grizzly aka Griz! Griz is a smooth haired Dachshund born 9th November 2021.
Griz was brought in to the facility as an unknown stray. After some investigating Dee found that unfortunately Griz's "finder" was in fact his owner trying to dump him. Griz is now on the lookout for his new forever family. His previous owner has stated that he wasn't getting along with their other dog, so he isn't able to keep him. His surrender profile states he is NOT house trained, obedience trained & not outgoing or confident. He travels well in the car & doesn't appear to have separation anxiety. In saying this though, it does say that he has previously dug under their fence, so he will need very secure fencing. This profile is quite vague as it states he is semi good with children, strangers & dogs.
When Grizzly was first brought in to us, he was very timid & did try biting several staff out of fear. He was very shut down. Since spending a little bit more time with him & completing his behaviour assessment he has definitely come out of his shell. We've found he is obsessed with toys & loves tennis balls! I've never seen a Dachshund jump as high as he did when he was trying to reach the ball Briony was holding. Griz has also become quite friendly & affectionate with staff. It's been all licks and no teeth which is a huge turn around so quickly.
For his previous fear based reaction we are recommending a home with no small children.
Griz tested quite well with other dogs at the facility, however he was quite timid with them, so he wouldn't suit a home with an existing boisterous dog. We did notice he had a few bite marks on his head & ear, so we believe the previous dog he lived with had attacked him.
If you have a calm, friendly dog a home, we will need you to bring them in so we can ensure they get along before going home.
Griz appeared unfazed by cats, however he does have a very high prey drive with pocket pets which is a typical trait with his breed. Because of this we are recommending a home with no pocket pets & no cats.
Griz has shown no signs of separation anxiety or food aggression towards humans since being at the facility. As he is quite skinny there is a possibility he may have food aggression towards other animals in the home, so we are recommending he be fed separately.
Griz's adoption fee is $800 and includes his desexing, lifetime registration & current vaccination. Griz is also regularly treated for flea and worms.

Griz is located in East Maitland.
Adoption details
If you are interested in adopting one of our animals, please contact us on 0499 900 272.
Staff will ask more about your lifestyle and the information you provide will helps us to achieve the best match between the dog or cat and their new home. We will also have certain adoption requirements that have to be approved prior to meeting the animal (eg fencing requirements, no young kids, etc)
Once all of your questions have been answered and adoption requirements met and approved, its time to meet your potential new furbaby. This meet will be conducted at the shelter in the Hunter Valley.
Should you have an existing dog in your life, we will require a meet and greet to ensure that they get along.
The final step (pending agreement by both parties) is the payment of the adoption fee and filling in of associated paperwork for your new furbaby.
Congratulations, you have now saved a life!
