About Cubby
Cubby is a sweet young dog that is ready for a kind, patient owner to show him what this world is all about!
HOUSEHOLD- It appears that he has had minimal exposure to a lot of things in life and he will require an owner/family who have some time to spend with him building his confidence in new places, with foreign objects, loud noises and sudden movements. He seeks comfort and support from his handler by jumping up for cuddles which can be hard to resist but due to his size & more timid tendencies we would be recommending a home with children 12yrs and above at this stage. We do believe that given the time needed to develop a positive outlook on all areas of life, this boy will be an amazing life companion.
ON-GOING TRAINING- Cubby is responding well to positive reinforcement training and his new family/owner would be best to focus on his lead manners, basic obedience, and then generalised confidence building/socialisation/exposure in the real world. He is a smart young dog that needs work on his emotional control more than anything.
ON LEAD- Cubby is a little erratic on lead but when given the correct support from his handler he responds well. Basic lead training and time will help correct his lead manners and the more he gets out the better!
PLAY/TOYS- Cubby does enjoy a variety of toys and can play happily by himself although he prefers handler interaction. He is easily distracted/over exited here at the facility but we are working on a more settled game style and with time we are sure he will respond well.
OTHER DOGS- Cubby is keen to meet any canine friend that is also willing to meet him. He is very playful and respectful of another dogs signals and has shown behaviours that make us think he would be suitable to live with another canine companion. A social, calm, confident dog would be his best match so that he can build further confidence in the world and learn the best doggie manners that he can.
CATS/OTHER ANIMALS- Our cattery was too much for Cubby and he refused to enter the area. The smells, a hiss (or two) and Cubby tucked his tail and almost ran the other way. This does mean that we did not see a true representation of his suitability to live with cats and we will work on identifying how suitable he may be to share his home with a feline friend in the coming weeks. Any adoption applications that involve cats in his new home will be considered at this stage and discussed with applicants at the time.
CAR RIDES- Cubby was initially nervous to enter the vehicle but settled quite quickly in the back seat where he was curious to look out of the windows. He showed no signs of carsickness but has only been on short trips within the local area.
CARE/GROOMING- Cubby has a medium length coat that will require a light brush 1-2 times per week. He is a little unsure of further handling and grooming becoming fidgety or wiggle trying to avoid the whole thing. He will require time to build confidence with further handling and may even benefit from co-operative care training into the future.
EXERCISE- Being a young energetic pup, Cubby will require a daily walk/run in combination with time spent playing games and training in the backyard. He is a very social boy and would thrive with being involved in as many family activities as possible to help keep him mentally stimulated. Enrichment items such as snuffle mats, licki mats and food puzzles will also help keep his mind occupied and prevent any boredom behaviours becoming destructive!
NUTRITION- Cubby is still on a puppy diet being feed 2-3 times daily. Once he is settled in a home environment his nutritional needs may change and monitoring for a healthy weight may require a change to this current feed routine.
Cubby is a 8 month old Cattle X and currently at our Charmhaven Shelter. His $550 adoption fee covers: desexing, microchipping, lifetime registration, current vaccination, flea & worming treatments.
