About Charlie Chap
Charlie Chap
Looking for a strikingly handsome boy??
Meet our beautiful Charlie Chap. First generation labradoodle
Labrador x Poodle
Charlie pretty much has a lab looking sleek shiny black coat with a few curly waves on his back
This boy is now looking for his forever home and he won’t disappoint.
Charlier settled into foster life with ease, taking his change in environment in his stride and heading straight into the backyard to play with his new pals. Charlie has a loving happy demeanor, an easy going goofball, who has been a delight to foster.
Favorite things
Chewing cow hooves or other natural dog treats
Tug o war with his resident fur pal
Playing ball whether it be soccer/footy or tennis ball. He loves them
Picking up plastic drink bottles or balls at the park and carrying them around
Walks, sniffing, exploring
Cuddles
Sloppy kisses
Belly rubs, head scratches
Food, food, food
Car trips where he can rest his head on the center console
PLEASE CHECK YOUR SPAM AND JUNK FOLDERS FOR YOUR APPLICATION FORM TO COMPLETE ONCE YOU HAVE SENT YOUR ENQUIRY
Please read Charlie's full profile as he has recently had surgery for a cataract and has ongoing care for another 9 months which include vet appointments at Malvern Animal Eye Clinic. Probably a further 2-3 appointments are required
Human interaction
Charlie Chap is a cuddle bug. He does like to put his paws on your lap and shower you with sloppy kisses if you let him. If you tell him to sit/drop he will listen.
Charlie is very social and thrives on meeting new people. He can get a bit excited, lacking impulse control when you first come home, so may jump up but with patience and training he is learning to sit for pats. He is currently being fostered with two other dogs so does feed off their excitement too
He knows the commands sit, drop, wait, shake, outside, wee, bed, leave, go. Generally he is a well mannered boy, but as he is still in his teens can get a bit excited at times so if adopting to a household with kids they do need to be dog savvy, older than 8.
Charlie likes to be around people so needs to be included in the household activities when home. He will follow you around at home but is able to be independent if no one is around. He can bring out little cheeky stubbornness at times where he will just plonk himself down and not move lol
Animal interaction
Charlee has been fostered with up to 3 other dogs in the home. Two males and a female. He enjoys the company of another active dog that will engage in play and tug o war especially if he can find a lone sock to play with. He may pull to meet a dog. He has met a lot of different size dogs and has no problem as long as they have manners. As with all dogs we recommend slow introductions on lead. Generally he is your mister nice guy. He is polite in meetings and not too overbearing or jumpy at initial meetings but will want to engage in play to chase or be chased .
If adopted with another dog Charlie will need to have his play monitored for the next 4 weeks due to his recent eye surgery. He needs to avoid getting knocks to his eye or being to boisterous
He will be reactive if a dog is too dominant or antisocial towards him, and has shown some reactivity towards intact males.
He is fed with the other dogs and will sit and wait to be fed. He is polite and will not try to eat from other dog bowls. He is happy to share toys and treats. Has not shown any resource guarding.
Charlie would love another playmate to rough and tumble with, this would need to be female as we dont to adopt the same sex (risk of dominance issues). Charlie would be fine with a smaller robust dog like a staffy breed
Charlie is untested with cats and other pocket pets
Sleep
Charlee will sleep independently on his mat in the lounge room
Once put to bed he will sleep till morning unless he needs a toilet, where he will use the doggy door.
Independence
Charlee is fine to be on his own during the day as long as he has some toys or chews to keep him entertained
He will sleep for most of the day. He may bark for a few minutes when you leave but will settle. He is pretty quiet around the house and not an excessive barker
He is happy being left alone while his carer works
He has not been destructive, his Carer does not leave any temptations around. He will take the opportunity to chew cardboard/ plastic if left around or anything that may have had food in it. LAB nose
Obedience
Charlie has been well trained prior to coming into care. He will sit when told. Will wait at the door, wait for food until he’s given the command 'go". Shake, leave, drop, bed, come, out. Charlie has shown good recall when off lead unless there is distraction of another dog. On the lead he does like to say hello to dogs he walks past but we have been working on sitting and leaving when a dog walks past to ensure he doesn't always get his way. Continuing his training is a must to ensure he continues to blossom into the super star he is becoming.
Food
Charlie is being fed high quality Royal Canin twice a day
Charlie being a lab will consume more than he needs so his weight will need to be monitored. He has got a bit chunky in care as he has had to have limited activity while his eye heals.
He will need to be watched around easy chewable toys as he does love to chew toys so they need to be very hardy to ensure he doesn’t ingest anything he shouldn’t. He will try to chew plastic bottles / lids/ squeakers/ balls so he does need supervision around these items. He’s best given long lasting treats like big marrow bones, cow hooves and other natural chews.
Charlie does like to hang around where food is involved but will not take food unless offered
He is generally gentle, taking treats, waiting his turn.
He is food motivated which has helped his training when on walks
He does like his veggies such as broccolini stalks and carrots
Toileting/Hygiene
Charlie loves being brushed. He does shed to some degree as is a first generation labradoodle so has a slightly wavy coat. Definitely much more lab than oodle
He is fully toilet trained and has access via a doggy door. He did have a few accidents inside initially which is not uncommon in a new home is the first few days
Walking and exercising
Charlie walks once a day for a good half an hour at least. He loves to sniff the daily news and replies by cocking his leg too.
Charlie can be strong on lead especially when he finds something to sniff so will need some more training on lead. He is great in off lead areas and does have good recall unless playing with another dog. He is treat driven so will sit / stay when told
Charlie does love having the ball thrown or kicked for him. He loves a good run at the oval chasing his mates around
Charlie loves the beach and water, so would love a home by the sea or a baby pool to cool off in on warmer days
Car travel
Charlie travels very well in the car secured in the back. He does like to rest his head in the center console while traveling
Ideal home
A home that are prepared to continue his eye care follow up at Malvern Animal Eye care for another 8 months (12 months in total)
A home with another social female
If an only dog home he must be socialized with other dogs as he gets a lot of enjoyment from engaging with other dogs
A family who will include him in their daily life inside the home
An active family who like the outdoors and much as him who can offer at least a daily walk
Children over 8 only because he can be a bit excitable and jumpy at times
No apartment/ small backyard will be considered
A family committed to ongoing training
Medical notes
Medical Issues
Unfortunately Charlie was surrendered into rescue as he was found to have a cataract in his left eye which required surgery which his owners could not afford.
Ak9 came to the rescue and has now helped to restore sight to his left eye. His other eye is perfectly normal and shows no signs of abnormalities. He has had extensive testing to his eyes
Charlee was born with an abnormal blood vessel in his left eye which usually disappears at about 6 weeks. Charlie's did not disintegrate and therefore caused his cataract. He was only able to see light or dark out of the eye. The cataract has now been removed so he now has good long sight with some limitation to his short sight. (close up sight). His sight has definitely improved and he can now easily see his favorite ball being thrown for him
His right eye is completely normal. Charlie will need ongoing drops for a period of approx 9 months.
During this time will need follow up appointments at Malvern Animal Eye Care for 12 months so new owners will need to be prepared to take him to these appointments. Ongoing costs are new owners responsibility
All his eye details will be provided with adoption
Next appointment is in 4 months with an estimated cost $180. (Eye Check Up Consultation)
He may need another 1 -2 appointments before being fully discharged
He will need ongoing eye drops administered once daily till discharged
AK9 will supply with approx 6 -8 weeks of drops.
Drops can be purchased at a normal chemist costing approx $50.
These will last approx 6-8 weeks, we will provide scripts
Charlie will be weaned off his 2nd daily oral medication in two weeks (early Aug)
All Charlie's medical paperwork from Animal Eye Care will be provided to new owners.
The likelihood of Charlie's cataract reoccuring is low.
