About Bert
Bert was found on the Ayre highway, heading towards South Australia. We don't know if he was abandoned, or lost, but he wasn't microchipped, and attempts to find his owner were unsuccessful. He was extremely emaciated when he was found, but is putting on weight nicely. (and has had all his vet-work done as well).
Bert has been shuffled through a few foster carers, mostly because the carers' situations changed, not through any fault of his own. Dog social and plays nicely with other dogs, but would prefer to be the only dog at home. (One foster carer reported that he was resource guarding food/toys from other dogs, but current carers don't have other dogs so can't confirm this.) Does not resource guard food or toys from people that we have noticed.
He still gobbles his food- a remnant from beings starved for so long. We've been putting alot of his food into kongs, Kong Wobbles and other inter-active food toys. He's a great problem-solver and loves figuring these out.
Is many way Bert is a typical Kelpie--he's intelligent, energetic and agile. He's dog friendly meeting dogs out on walks. He doesn't appear to have ever been leash-trained, and is still a bit of a butterfly on the lead now--following his nose and tangling himself up! He's not very big so even when he pulls he's not very strong. He likes to jump up and lick your nose, so maybe best with older children for now.
This sweet boy is very clingy, and is happiest when close enough to be touching you-- preferably curled up on the couch. Can be left alone as long as he has access to inside--but if locked outside will take out fly screens trying to get in, and we expect would go walkabout if fences aren't high enough. Previous carer reported him barking when he was locked outside away from the resident dogs, but we've only heard him bark once or twice at people walking in front of the house.
Do you have the time & energy levels to own a working dog? Are you prepared to exercise, train and socialise me, provide me with enrichment activities, and be consistent with your boundaries? All dogs need a lot of care, but working breed dogs just generally need more of it! That's part of the fun for you and me. We'll develop an amazing bond because of what we do together & I'll be the most loyal, devoted dog ever!
