About Karl
💙 Meet Karl 💙
This cool, calm and collected gentleman makes owning a larger breed dog look easy. He is personable, affectionate and playful in all the right ways.
HOUSEHOLD- Karl could suit a variety of households who have had large breed experience before and whilst he has shown no concerning behaviour towards smaller children we would be recommending an adult only home due to his large size and playful nature. He has no idea of his true strength and will easily knock smaller humans over accidently just trying to interact with them.
ON-GOING TRAINING- Karl has some of his basic obedience down pat already knowing how to sit and shake. He is food motivated and would benefit greatly from learning further skills such as stop, down and stay to help him maintain good human etiquette. His recall skills also require some work and due to his size, his manners are super important requiring time and commitment from his new family.
ON LEAD- Karl is a big strong boy on lead and will require further lead training to fine-tune his walking.
He checks in regularly with his handler and is very responsive to verbal cues (most of the time) but, he is more than happy to guide his handler to what he wants, when he wants it if given the chance.
PLAY/TOYS- Whilst Karl looks at toys and shows an interest them, he would much rather run or roll around on the ground with you by his side. He has shown himself to be a polite player rarely attempting to jump up on anyone and always being interactive when prompted. Due to his larger size the occasional knock to the ground is a possibility but he is always more than happy to help you up by offering big licks to the face!
OTHER DOGS- Karl has displayed an interest in meeting other dogs but can be moved away from them easily if he they are not suitable to meet him. He originally came to the facility with a younger boisterous dog and is very tolerant of her exuberant interactions. He will continue to meet dogs of all shapes and sizes here at the facility and at this stage appears social enough to be potentially rehomed with another canine companion or by himself. A doggie meet and greet with any canine companions is essential to confirm that they get along well.
CATS/OTHER ANIMALS- Entering our cattery Karl displayed caution. He observed them, moved slowly and moved himself straight back outside. He did not display any signs of aggression towards the cats but would be best suited in a no cat household until further exposure here at the facility can help us know how he really feels about feline friends.
CAR RIDES- Karl entered the car with confidence and immediately sat relaxed and comfortable in the back seat for a majority of the trip. He will require a chest harness attachment for safe car travel or a caged back section to call his own. New owners will also need to be aware that as he ages a ramp may become an essential item to help him get in and out of the car and help prevent arthritis or hip problems developing.
CARE/GROOMING- Karl has a lovely short coat that will require minimal grooming. A brush once a week and a bath once a month or when dirty, will provide him with healthy skin and coat. Due to his loose jowls and droopy eyelids his main care will be directed to his eye health and monitoring for skin irritations. Owners will also need to be aware of any signs of arthritis as he ages. Preventative care for arthritis can be started now for him and might be worth a vet visit to discuss.
EXERCISE- Karl has a decent amount of energy and will require a daily walk and play to keep him mentally and physically stimulated. He enjoys a leisurely stroll when out walking but, he is more than happy to have a chasing running game at home in an enclosed backyard when prompted. Care should be taken to avoid heavy impact exercises and it is unclear if he likes swimming or the water at this stage.
NUTRITION- Karl is currently being fed 3 meals a day in a raised feed dish to help him gain/maintain his weight. He is eating a combination of puppy and adult food to help him gain some condition and would just need to be monitored in his new home in case this feed combination becomes too much.
BREED - Neo mastiff
