Mars

Mars is a unique, quirky cat.

This big fluffy boy is the perfect blend of sweet and spice. He loves people in much the same way a dog does, wanting to be part of the action and inserting himself into all the goings on. He regularly seeks out human company, purring his head off. If nothing much is happening he spends his days sleeping in cute positions.

He loves being patted on the top of his head, but can’t cope much with being stroked on his back, possible due to some arthritis. If his back is touched he will often give a little warning nibble, before hissing and running off. He is being treated with a trial of meloxicam with good results so far, this does not taste unpleasant and goes into his food and he eats it without complaint.

Despite being sensitive to having his back touched, Mars is quite an athletic cat and loves running up and down the staircase and ricocheting from room to room on a sudden whim. He will also jump up onto the kitchen bench from time to time if he’s feeling curious. At the same time, he goes outside during the day where there are 6 foot paling fences and shows little inclination to scale them. He will spend a few minutes outside then come back in and go back to sleeping by a sunny window.

Mars is currently in foster care with another cat and is showing himself to be best suited as an only cat as he is quite territorial and appears to want all the attentions for himself.

Our Mars does not have a penis. It was removed on vet recommendation due to chronic issues with urinary crystals, now resolved. To prevent recurrence he must be on a wet food only diet. His favourite is Fancy Feast Savoury Centres. He is immaculately housetrained and uses the litter tray religiously.

Mars has many charming ways about him and one of his most endearing little traits is going to his feeding place at breakfast and dinner time and just sitting politely, waiting patiently. He doesn’t meow or hassle for food, but just sits and waits with his little white paws placed in the spot where his plate goes.

Another one of our boy’s quirks is that he absolutely loves going to the vet. On a recent vet visit he came home with his head smelling of perfume, such was his shameless schmoozing with the staff.

During his time in foster care there have been several canine visitors and Mars has shown indifference to them, he’s also been on a road trip with a couple of dogs and adjusted quickly to his holiday surrounds so we think he’d manage in a home with a dog or two provided they give him space to adjust and leave him be.

Mars would suit an easy going cat person who is unfazed by his eccentricities and would in fact celebrate them. He needs to be embraced just as he is; friendly and hissy, perfect in his own, odd way. Not suited to a home with other cats, children, the elderly or otherwise vulnerable people, nor would he do well in a confined living space as he is a large cat who needs some outdoor access to maintain his mental health. He does not roam, but sits in the sun for a short period then comes back inside.
