About Mickey
Mikey is a very handsome Staffy X who at 8 months old is still an enthusiastic, affectionate young pup.
HOUSEHOLD- His gorgeous looks mask a more intricate, lovable personality that will require some time and patience to help settle and build further. He could potentially suit many different home environments but will require a household that can commit to building his confidence and social exposure to the world keeping him physically and mentally stimulated to keep him content. Confident dog social children 12yrs and above could be suitable for him at this stage.
ON-GOING TRAINING- Mikey can sit on command and is food motivated to learn more. To help make him the best dog he can be his new owners would be best to continue with on-going basic obedience classes where lead training, impulse control and basic doggy manners can be covered. His worst habits include jumping up (when uninvited) and biting at the lead when overexcited. These behaviours are being addressed at the facility.
ON LEAD- Mikey can walk well on lead when he is not over excited and responds well to his name when called. He does like to test his handler by chewing/grabbing at the lead but responds well to an ‘ah’ or ‘no’ command verbally given and once he realises that this behaviour will not be tolerated he stops. He will benefit from further lead training.
PLAY/TOYS- Mikey loves to play and interact with a handler but can become overexcited easily and is still learning how, when and where to use his mouth. He responds well to a verbal ‘ah’ or ‘no’ command if he does take things too far and will settle easily if ignored. His new family will need to help him improve his play manners over time and prefers to play tug’o’war as his game of choice.
OTHER DOGS- Mikey is a boisterous, playful pup. He is keen to meet every dog he can but does require time to learn his proper polite doggy manners because some dogs may not like his overly friendly meet and greets. He would be suitable to be rehomed with another doggie friend but a meet and greet is essential to confirm if they are tolerant of his playful nature. At the facility through a fence Mikey will bark and display reactive tendencies but this appears to be related to the pent up frustration involved with the kennel environment.
CATS/OTHER ANIMALS- Mikey entered the cattery with confidence and recovered quickly when hissed at by a not so friendly cat. Whilst he did not show outright aggression towards the cats he did become over excited and displayed behaviours that would lead us to believe he would chase if a cat was able to run free. For this reason he is best suited to a no cat household at this stage.
CAR RIDES- Mikey showed confidence and interest in getting in and out of the car and settled well once secured in his harness. He showed no signs of car sickness and was keen to get out once parked at a given location.
GROOMING/CARE- Mikey has a short easy to maintain coat and appears to show no signs or symptoms of skin sensitivities or other health issues at this stage. He is currently being fed two meals a day based on a dry food diet with wet feed options such as tinned or fresh meat options offered when available. We always recommend a high quality diet to help prevent any health issues into the future and regular annual vet visits to maintain vaccination status and catch issues before they become a real problem.
EXERCISE- Mikey is a high energy needs pup. He would best suit an energetic household who is able to take him for daily walks/runs and involve him in many activities at home.
Mikey's $300 adoption fee covers: microchipping, lifetime registration, desexing, current vaccination, flea and worming treatments.
Mickey is currently located at our Erina Shelter.
