About Danny
PLEASE NOTE THAT UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE UNABLE TO FLY OUR ANIMALS EITHER WITHIN WA OR INTERSTATE
NAME: Danny
BEFORE RESCUE: Came to SAFE Esperance from the pound.
BREED: Shar Pei X
BREED TRAITS: originally bred to guard, hunt and herd the Shar Pei is now a companion dog. A calm, independent thinker, sometimes aloof he is a good watch dog and guard dog and devoted to his family. Early training is essential to counter his stubborn strong will and socialisation with humans and dogs must begin early. Due to his short nose he is prone to overheating so needs to be an inside dog.
***************************************************************
ASSETS: Easygoing, a little shy at first, laidback, sensitive and very sweet! Danny loves women but can be timid around men initially and takes a while to be comfortable in their presence. He loves a good pat!
FAVOURITE THINGS: Danny loves exploring at the beach, although he isn't a big fan of the ocean yet. He has a favourite rope toy and loves to run around after you and be by your side. He's learning to play fetch but needs some practice to master it! When out walking Danny loves to put his head down and sniff everything around him. He laps up any attention he can get and loves cuddle time - the more strokes and pats the happier he is.
ENDEARING FEATURES: He has a great personality and a very expressive face.
OTHER ANIMALS: Danny wants to meet and greet every dog he sees but can sometimes be a little shy - consistent gentle exposure will help grow his confidence. Once Danny knows a dog is friendly he loves to play. He is untested with cats so we would prefer a dog only home for him. Danny has previously been in care with another dog and, even though his person is his focus, he does enjoy the company of another dog.
GENERAL INFO: Danny walks well on the lead as long as he's allowed to sniff, enjoys travelling in the car and likes to get out and about with his people. He is housetrained and generally doesn't bark unless there is a strange noise. He isn't a fan of being left alone and will be destructive (will chew, dig and scratch at the door) if left for too long - he is in care with a full-time worker but if you can break up the day for him with a trip home at lunch time this will help or use dog walkers/daycare. He knows a few commands and is always eager to please so further training should be a breeze with him.
ESSENTIALS for Danny:
** A loving home with someone who can be there with him for part of the day (part time worker/retiree/tradie who wants a daily companion) or can take him with them when they leave the house. A predictable routine helps Danny to feel safe and secure.
** Danny will need good daily exercise, playtime and mental activity - he is quite high energy and would love a couple of walks a day.
** A home that is willing to involve him in daily activities is essential for him. He would also benefit from interactive toys such as Kongs, snuffle mat, lick mat etc if left alone.
** Danny needs a fenced, secure, good sized yard with grass and interesting things to sniff and explore.
**Danny loves to be with his people so he needs to be allowed inside the home when you are there and to sleep inside at night, preferably as close to his people as possible!
** Danny could live with dog-savvy gentle children over 12 years of age who can read his signals - he is a little timid so a calm home is best for him, or a devoted adult only home. He would love to have regular interaction with other friendly dogs in a safe environment.
