NAME: Leeo

BEFORE RESCUE: Came to SAFE Esperance as an owner surrender.

BREED: Chihuahua x Terrier
BREED TRAITS: Chihuahuas love to be with their people and are definitely companion dogs that do not like to be left alone. They are sensitive and can be problematic if overindulged. They love their family but can be aloof or wary of strangers and other dogs so early socialisation is very important. Chihuahuas are not outside dogs. Bright and wilful they will learn if you make it fun.

Terriers come in all shapes and sizes and were bred for different reasons, but mainly farm work or ratting. Today they are companions. Terriers are generally high energy, very bright and quick to learn but can be stubborn. They have strong personalities and a sense of fun and want to be included in everything you do. Don't take on a terrier unless you really do want a companion.

ASSETS: Easygoing, friendly to everyone he meets, sweet and playful. Leeo loves human company and is always happy to be around you. He's a complete sweetheart!

FAVOURITE THINGS: Leeo loves to play with the other dogs in his foster home, chase his rope toy and play tug of war. He'll then curl in a ball in your lap for a snooze before getting up and doing it all over again! He isn't a fan of early mornings and likes to stay in his bed for as long as possible.

ENDEARING FEATURES: He has a loving, gentle nature, and the most amazing ears!

OTHER ANIMALS: Leeo enjoys the company of other friendly dogs and loves to play. He isn't a fan of sharing his treats so prefers to eat away from other dogs. He is fine around cats so could live with a dog-savvy cat after gentle introductions.

GENERAL INFO: Leeo walks well on the lead, enjoys travelling in the car and likes to get out and about with his people. He is housetrained and will bark when someone is at the door. He has got into the habit of chewing his blankets and bed after he's eaten his dinner but otherwise isn't destructive. He knows a few commands and is always eager to please so further training should be a breeze with him.

ESSENTIALS for Leeo:

** A loving home with someone who can be there with him for most of the day on a permanent basis or can take him with them when they leave the house.

** Leeo will need daily exercise, playtime and mental activity. A home that is willing to involve him in family activities is essential for him. Even though classed as a senior he is still very active.

** Leeo needs a fenced, secure yard with grass and interesting things to sniff and explore. He does have a history of escaping, but hasn't attempted this in his foster home as he has the run of the house as well as people and other dogs to keep him company.

**Leeo loves to be with his people so he needs to be allowed inside the home when you are there and to sleep inside at night, preferably as close to his people as possible - they are central to his happiness!

** Leeo could suit a home with older dog-savvy children who will be able to read his signals, or an adult only home. He is coming into his senior years and would appreciate gentle, sensitive handling. He would love another dog with a similar energy level to live and play with or at the least have regular interaction with other dogs in a safe environment.
