About Dexter
Melbourne Big Dog Lovers
Handsome Dexter is SEEKING his forever home.
While dogs of all sizes offer a myriad of benefits such as warm cuddles and tail-wagging greetings, you may be surprised to learn that owning a large breed dog can improve your world in ways you had not yet imagined.
In fact, the larger dogs are often preferred to smaller dog breeds when a calm companion is required or a specific task is needed.
Poor Dexter being a large breed has been overlooked for so long . After more than 90 days in the pound- due to overcrowding he needed to be rescued urgently before the pound is forced to make space by euthanasia. Which is the reality of all pounds across Australia.
He is finally free and currently in a short term care of Tails of The Forgotten Paws AU founder.
All his smaller breed friends have left the pound and found a home but Dexter.
Dexter was a sad surrender from a family of 2 adults and 3 children that suddenly lost their home and had nowhere to go so they had to leave him at the pound.
Ranger can't speak highly enough about this guy- true gentleman who is the biggest sook.
The transport crew would have adopted Dexter if it wasn't because they already have 4 dogs lol.
That's how gorgeous he is !
Don't let his size fool you - Dexter is a big softie! Pretty chill happy go lucky guy and def has lived his life as an indoor dog. Happy to be the only dog too he is not fuss about other dogs. Quite independent
He prefers dogs that are also independent mature and calm.
He is 6.5yo Border Collie cross w a large breed ~currently at 46kg he is working hard to loose 3kg *doctor's order
He has a friendly easy going temperament but also independent . He doesn't get over the top with other dogs, show towards other dogs when he was at the pound.
He is currently decompressing and learning everything about the big city.
He has learned to use the dog door and sleep through the night on his bed. He is also crate trained.
Poor Dexter showing signs of arthritis on his left hip
Unfortunately being at the pound for 3 mths sleeping on concrete didn't help either and he become overweight
His family will need to be able to provide Dexter with arthritis management for the rest of his life.
He is currently on Carthrophen injection and Beransa injection
Both are the best in the market in terms of arthritis management for dogs. This is roughly $100 per month .
Inside the house Dexter is a true gentleman. He doesn't run around he prefers lounging on the couch or watch what his human is doing hopping quietly to get some crumbs on the floor lol
You won't find him demanding to be walked or exercise. He has past that stage in his life lol but he does enjoy leisurely walk 30 mins twice a day . More importantly he is always up for a car ride even if it's just to the corner shop.
This guy just want to be someone's companion. Loyal and intelligent true to his breed.
He is Cat Friendly *provided the cat is dog friendly*
He is Kids Friendly *above 7yo dog savy kids*
He is Dog Friendly *medium to large size preferred but he is also more than happy to be the only dog in the house* He is looking to retire into a loving peaceful home
He is Mainly INDOOR with access to outdoor when needed. He can use the dog door.
He sleeps on his bed through the night and happy to sleep in and wake up whenever you are
ON YOUR BED is the command to tell him it's bed time.
If you are big dog lovers why not open your home for a mature 6.5yo old Dexter ?
