Charlieās Forever Home Search
Oh, we know. Heās adorable. But he has a specific list about what he needs in his forever home.
1. Family who are home most or all the time. Maybe you work one or two days a week, maybe Charlie could go to work with you. Whatever the case, he doesnāt like being alone for too long.
2. No children under the age of 16 living in the home. Grandkids who visit every few weeks or older kids who come by on the weekends would be okay, but he needs to predominantly be with adults.
3. No other dogs living in the home, but the option to socialise regularly. He isnāt great at reading social cues from other dogs and can get in their face, so mainly human time with occasional dog time is what heās after.
4. Regular grooming. Thatās a trim every 6-8 weeks, 2 big grooms a year and daily face cleaning.
Read all those? Sound like you? Great, letās talk about Charlie.
Charlie is an 18 month old boy who his foster mum describes as a cross between a Maltese, a poodle, a sausage dog and a wombat. What is his actual breed? Who knows! Whatās important is his personality.
Charlie started life as many dogs we have seen; someone saw an adorable little puppy and didnāt realise how much work would be involved. His coat was never maintained, it was almost 10cm long and filled with knots, sticks and other things you probably donāt want to know about. He was constantly itchy and looking for things to scratch on, and he found peopleās feet! He finally got some relief, but found he was regularly tripping people over and being kicked out of the way. He was not supervised when playing with children and they were much too rough with him. You can see why Charlie finds it a little bit tricky to be trusting of people, hey?
Thankfully, he was surrendered, and when he came into care it took hours to trim, wash and remove all the matted fur from his coat. But he was finally able to act like a dog again! He was running, leaping, playing, and still rubbing his face on everything he could find..
Charlie is cheeky, loving, loyal and quite a funny little boy. He likes to know where you are at all times but rarely gets in your face. He will happily sleep on the couch or floor next to you, just as long as he is being included.
He loves to play with toys and has finally mastered the art of throwing them for himself. He isnāt a chewer or a digger but will claim anything left out as a his own.
He walks well on a lead and harness without pulling, but only for about 15 minutes, then itās time for a nap; those little legs work hard! He would do well with a short daily walk, or at least 3 times a week.
Heās got quite the set of lungs on him when he wants to. In his foster home he is with other dogs and will occasionally get caught up barking with them, he even let out a howl once! But generally he isnāt a barker, just enough to protect his home.
He has showed signs of food aggression with other dogs, both with his own food and when his humans have food. If he is in a home with another dog they would need to be fed separately and closely monitored when there is human food around.
He has many dog friends in his foster home, but doesnāt rely on them. He is content spending time with people and follows his foster mum around the house and to her studio to work. He generally plays well with them, but can get obsessive with play and doesnāt know when itās time to stop.
He is showing improvement with house training, but hasnāt mastered it yet as there are occasional accidents inside. He is getting better at going outside when prompted to ādo weesā but sometimes only lets out a little because he knows then he can go back inside. Cheeky boy! He does have access to a dog door and uses it regularly.
He is crate trained at night and will sleep through without trouble. He doesnāt yet see the crate as his safe space as he would prefer to spend his days on the couch.
Overall, Charlie is incredibly well adjusted given the start he had to life. With the right home, a little discipline and a lot of love, he will make your family very happy.
