About Oscar
Oscar is a 1 year old Papillon x Jack Russell who has found himself homeless through no fault of his own. His previous family struggled to give him the time and focus, a Highly Intelligent always curious and energetic little pup like Oscar needs. Oscar was also not good with the CAT.
Oscar was previously rehomed via a rehoming agency to a home that was not the right fit for him, and as a result, he was returned after 2 weeks! Due to mouthing. This is typical puppy behaviour, especially when over excited and imagine how stressed and confused it must have been for him to have been moved to a new home with strangers. Rescue dogs need time to decompress and settle into their new environment and their new humans. Please give them the right amount of time they need to settle. They need at least 3 weeks.
After spending 4 weeks with Oscar, we can see he is HIGHLY intelligent, and with the right amount of exercise combined with some enrichment & mental stimulation, his needs have been met and he can relax by your side and have some good quality downtime while you work or watch TV. He is such a GOOD BOY! He is still so young and has so much to learn about the new world. He just needs some guidance, and someone who is patient enough to give him the proper training he needs.
He has already shown us how quickly he can learn from other more mature, well behaved dogs so a home with another dog would be preferable. He loves to play with other dogs
Oscar is a beautiful little boy who is both very charming and a little cheeky. He is really fun to be around. He is very playful, friendly, snuggly and wants to be near you.
He is an inside dog but also likes to potter around in the yard, so a doggie door with access to a secured yard would be ideal for Oscar as he likes to go out an explore. Oscar loves his car rides and adventures. Even if tired, he still props himself up looking out the window watching the world go by.
He loves to run and chase the ball, play with other dogs, when given the opportunity, and loves to chew, so some GOOD quality CHEW toys and CHEW TREATS like an ANTLER is a MUST! He also likes to play in the water, so walks along the beach, creek or river would be fantastic for Oscar. He had his first swim in our pool, and he loved it! He is a true water dog.
A highly intelligent pup like Oscar will become bored and prompt for attention if he hasn’t received enough exercise or stimulation so please make sure you are serious about meeting his needs before you apply.
Oscar is easily trained as he responds well to positive treat based training. He is still very young and will need a dedicated owner or family who are committed to his ongoing training and development, to teach him some boundaries, and provide him a balanced mix of exercise, enrichment and calming activities / downtime to let him become the best version of himself. He is a sweet boy who wants to please.
Oscar currently has 2 walks daily, puzzle games, scatter feeding activities, and very long naps during the day. Once his needs have been met he is quite happy to chill with you. He will be suited to an active family with older children, or someone who loves running, or do agility work with him
Oscar has been learning lots with us. He knows his basic commands SIT, STAY, WAIT, DOWN – He is getting better at the DROP command but he still needs work on that. This is where his cheekiness comes in to play as he loves to be chased ?? but please don’t chase him as he will think it’s ALL a GAME and will have an impact on his recall. He is a CHEEKY boy but so loveable.
Oscar is Toilet Trained and Dog Friendly
ANOTHER more mature friendly well socialised dog will benefit Oscar in his training *Experience with Terrier breed will be advantageous*
No 9 – 5 workers (working away from home) due to his training needs
Oscar NEEDS TRAINING & FURTHER DEVELOPMENT
Oscar Needs Regular Grooming and Brushing
FURTHER TRAINING NEEDS:
CALMNESS: Oscar gets a little excited when meeting people and other dogs but he settles very quickly. We have been very impressed with him. He came along to our Petbarn event - he was such a good boy who remained calm around all the people and dogs he met
RECALL: Oscar’s recall will need some work as he becomes easily distracted by everything going on around him.
INDEPENDENCE: Oscar will also need to learn some independence, as he can get a little anxious when left alone. This could also be due to being in a new unfamiliar environment so you will need to be patient with him as you work through this. Once he has settled into his new home - with proper training this should get better with time.
MOUTHY: We haven’t seen this much in our care but we do notice he will mouth a little accidentally when he is OVER EXCITED or OVER TIRED, so it’s important he learns to switch off throughout the day.
For this reason he cannot go to a home with small children, and a home where the owners are home more often than not will be ideal. We want to set up Oscar for success.
LEASH TRAINING: Oscar gets excited first out of the gate and can pull a little but will settle after 5 minutes
CONFIDENCE BUILDING: Oscar can become overwhelmed at a dog park when there are too many dogs so be mindful not to allow large dogs to stand over him
*Generally we don't recommend bringing untrained dog to dog parks*
AS WITH ALL OUR YOUNG DOGS, THERE WILL BE A MANDATORY REQUIREMENT OF ENROLMENT INTO OBEDIENCE TRAINING so Oscar can become the best version of himself
Family must allow OSCAR to settle in his new environment. Expecting him to behave his normal self in 2 to 3 days is unrealistic.
A rescue dog needs 3 weeks to settle. The first 2 to 3 weeks are important for the family to spend as much time as possible to get to know OSCAR - vice versa.
GROOMING NEEDS:
His coat will need regular brushing and combing, and his ears will need regular checking and cleaning
EXERCISE / ENRICHMENT / CALMENSS:
Exercise: One Daily walk at a Minimum, he is walked twice daily at present. He loves Chasing a ball, playing tug, his squeaky toys
Mental Stimulation: Scatter feeding, Puzzle Games, Snuffle Mats,
Calming: Chew Toys, Chews (Antler, Beef Choo, Pigs Ears), LickiMat
