About Yogi
Yogi is an amazing maremma sheepdog. He is huge, weighing 42kgs at 8 months, with a lot more growing to do. Yogi is very much a puppy, with massive paws and a loveable nature. He is very well socialised, and just loves greeting people and kids with a thumping tail and a smile.
Yogi came to us due to his habit of killing chickens. This is quite normal for maremmas to go through this stage when in puppyhood/adolescence, and requires training and maturity. Yogi has been extensively tested with poultry at the shelter. I will not set up a dog for failure, so as with any rescue, his introductions are slow and never puts anyone at risk. Yogi has never shown the slightest response to a chicken while here, although I have no doubt he'd go into puppy-mode and kill them with play if the chance arose. Yogi has a couple of chickens that sleep in a cage next to his bed at night, for desensitisation purposes. He has never shown any interest in them. I'm confident that with the right owner continuing his training, he can get past this issue.
Yogi will never be a "livestock guardian", as he loves his family too much. This does not mean, however, that he wont keep foxes and eagles away from his territory, and he will be a great dog in doing this. However he wants to be by your side, not by himself in a paddock. He is used to sleeping inside at night. It's clear he's been well loved.
Yogi knows how to sit, and walks gently on a lead. He loves other dogs, big and small, however needs supervision with the little ones due to his big paws and puppy-mode. Apparently he has chased cats before, but at the shelter we have never had an issue, with the normally scared shelter cat confidently walking around him. They've never been unsupervised, and again, I believe that what happened before he arrived here was due to his puppy-play-mode activated by a running cat. Chasing is fun for any dog, so continued training and guidance is needed.
Yogi makes friends everywhere he goes, it's impossible not to fall in love with him. As such, although he is listed for adoption, and I will let him go to the most perfect home, I'm also quite happy for him to join the shelter here on a permanent basis. This is one great dog! Every maremma is so unique, and special. I know there will never be another Yogi.
If you are interested in Yogi, you will need to meet several conditions. These include:
Other dog/s in the household. Yogi needs a mentor, and a dog to play with.
Acreage, with good fencing. A large backyard is not enough. Although Yogi hasn't found his voice yet, he is a purebred maremma, and he has been bred to bark.
Good fencing. A need for any maremma owner! Yogi is particularly huge, so he could step over most little fences.
An owner capable of giving direction in an assertive but gentle manner. If you want to put a giant dog in a harness, and train him to drag you around, while he's out of control and racing up to other dogs on a walk, please step away.
