About Benji
Meet Benji, a 12 week old male Chihuahua cross Maltese pup!
He's an adorable little guy who only weighs in at 1.7kg, but is full of personality and love. Benji is a friendly and snuggly boy who loves to curl up with his humans and give lots of kisses. Despite his tiny size, he has been through a lot in his short life - read his medical notes to learn all about this brave puppy's rough couple of weeks!
Benji came into rescue desperately unwell and requiring intensive care hospitalisation to give him a sliver of a chance of getting better and well again.
Now that Benji is well he is up-to-date on vaccinations, worming, tick, flea and heartworm prevention. He will also be desexed and have a microchip implanted prior to heading off to this new home.
Benjis' adoption fee covers not only his desexing surgery and microchip but also helps to cover a small portion of just the medications he received while hospitalised. His veterinary team has very kindly donated some funds to cover a small portion of his ICU stay.
If you're looking for an affectionate companion who will love you unconditionally, then look no further than Benji! He'll be sure to bring plenty of joy and cuddles into your home.
Medical notes
Benji is currently recovering beautifully after being hospitalised in our Intensive Care Unit for the past two weeks after receiving the dreaded parvovirus diagnosis. Benji came into our care so critically unwell with dehydration, that he was estimated to have just hours left before he would have succumbed to the disease without immediate intervention.
Our veterinary team worked tirelessly night and day with Benji, supporting his every need with necessary fluid therapies, anti-nausea medications, antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, along with the best supportive nursing care he could ever need.
Benji went on to require multiple Plasma blood transfusions to replace lost cells from the disease over the following days, as well as medications to alleviate any potential allergic reaction to the transfusion fluids. Benji was monitored closely by our wonderful team, who kept him comfortable, pain-free, dry, and clean throughout his stay in the hospital.
Benji struggled to be able to eat any recovery foods whilst he was unwell and required an Oesophageal Feeding Tube to be surgically placed, which allowed the team to deliver much-needed nutrients directly to his stomach. Free Calories! This procedure and placement of an Oesophageal Tube was just what Benji needed to give him the energy to cross that finish line toward recovery!
Now that Benji is out of the Intensive Care Ward, he is slowly but surely bouncing back to his normal adorable self, and we would love to find him the perfect new owner family to enjoy his much-deserved second chance at life with.
Benjis' adoption fee covers not only his desexing surgery and microchip but also helps to cover a small portion of just the medications he received while hospitalised. His veterinary team has very kindly donated some funds to cover a small portion of his ICU stay.
Parvovirus survivors typically go on to live normal, fulfilled lives once fully recovered, with a small percentage continuing on to have sensitive stomachs and requiring special, strict, or prescription diets to manage this.
We are more than happy to discuss further and in-depth with interested families!
