About Hercules
PLEASE NOTE THAT UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE UNABLE TO FLY OUR ANIMALS EITHER WITHIN WA OR INTERSTATE
NAME: Hercules
BEFORE RESCUE: Came to SAFE Esperance from the pound. He's settled beautifully into foster care and is loving his new life!
BREED: Border Collie x Terrier (13kgs)
BREED TRAITS:
Border Collie - originally bred to herd sheep they are a sensitive breed that needs company. Affectionate with family and people friendly. Highly intelligent and easy to train they need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation - they are not cuddly couch potatoes and need a job. They will herd anything that moves such as children, cars, bikes etc. They need an active owner, not a novice owner.
Terriers come in all shapes and sizes and were bred for different reasons, but many were for farm work or ratting. Today they are mainly companions. Terriers are generally high energy, very bright and quick to learn but can be stubborn. They have strong personalities and a sense of fun and want to be included in everything you do. Don't take on a terrier unless you really do want a companion.
***************************************************************
ASSETS: He's easygoing, affectionate, friendly, outgoing, confident, active, playful and very sweet! He's an absolute joy to be around.
FAVOURITE THINGS: Hercules loves his people! He's never happier than when he's following you around or curled up next to his person for a cuddle and a snooze. He gets on wonderfully with the other dog in his foster home and loves to play ball and chasey with him.
ENDEARING FEATURES: He has a loyal and loving nature and just loves to be loved. His foster carer has given him the nickname 'shadow' as he's always just a couple of steps behind him!
OTHER ANIMALS: He gets on well with other friendly dogs and loves their company. He could live with another friendly dog after gentle, supervised introduction. He is untested with cats and small animals so we won't rehome him with those just for their safety.
GENERAL INFO: Hercules loves to go out on walks and uses a harness which he's very comfortable with. He is nearly there with his housetraining (he just needs to master night-time) and will need routine and consistency for him to master his toileting. Expect a couple of accidents while he's settling in! He will bark to get attention or if someone is at the door but soon settles down again. He doesn't like stormy weather so will need to be kept safe and secure inside. He knows a few commands already and is a clever cookie so training should be a breeze with him. He does have a stubborn streak though, if he doesn't want to walk anymore he'll just sit down and refuse to move! He travels well in the car although will need to be restrained as he does tend to try to be close to the driver and lean on him!
ESSENTIALS for Hercules:
** An active, loving home with someone who can either be there with him for most of the day on a permanent basis or a worker who has a young playful doggy companion for Hercules.
** An owner who will dedicate time to training him and take him to classes where he can socialize and learn new things in a safe environment. He is part Border Collie so has a brain that needs to be used!
** He's an active boy so will need good daily exercise, playtime and mental activity. An active home that is willing to involve him in daily activities is essential for him, he really does need to be part of the family.
** Hercules needs a fenced, secure yard with grass and interesting things to sniff and explore.
** Hercules loves to be with his people so he needs to be allowed inside the home when you are there and to sleep inside at night, preferably as close to his people as possible!
** Hercules would best suit a home with older children (8+) who will be able to read his signals, or an adult only home. He would love another dog with a similar energy level to live and play with or at the least have regular interaction with other dogs either on his walks or as playdates.
