Ruby is our beautiful Chocolate Lab looking for a loving forever home
Ruby Chocolate is affectionately known as Ruby Roo, Ruby Doobie Do, Ruby Two Shoes or simply The Rubester

Ruby was dumped in the pound as her owners no longer wanted her. If you have been following Ruby’s story at Ak9 you would’ve seen how distressed our poor girl was when she first arrived. Ruby was dropped off at a carers home where she basically had a melt down her first night and required some sedation to help her through the trauma of her life being turned upside down. Thankfully Ruby has made it through some of the hardest days of her life and now has settled in beautifully to foster home life where she feels loved and protected

Ruby’s favorite things
Well of course number one it’s foooood. !!!
Second is people. Ruby loves pats and attention, to hang out wherever you are
She enjoys walks and swims with her resident pals down at the park
Sleep is also another favorite, she can do that for hours so she makes a great snuggle buddy
Human interaction
Ruby enjoys the company of people and is happy to say hello to those she meets on her walks
She can bark at visitors coming to the home but more to say ‘who are you’
Ruby can get a little excited and jump up when you first come home but she is starting to master sitting for a pat.
When Ruby first arrived into care she was very distressed, panting, barking and was afraid but has since settled and not displayed this type of behavior since
She likes to be center of attention for pats and will use her pokey nose to prod you for attention or lift a paw onto your lap
Ruby’s playful side is starting to emerge playing with the ball
Interaction with other dogs
Ruby is currently living with two other dogs
She enjoys the company of the male dog more than the female and is starting to engage in a bit more play. She likes to chase him when they are off lead at the park.
She has met a number of dogs at the park and is friendly to most but as with all dogs needs slow introductions. She is not a fan of dominant dogs in her face and at times may be reactive towards them. She does not display lead reactivity but will pull toward a dog. She can get a bit excited and frustrated if there are a lot of dogs running around her so she’s walked on lead in areas with alot of dog traffic.
She would be suited to a home with a male dog if he was placid and not overly dominant.
Once she gets to know a dog she is polite.
She is fed separately as she is a guts and will try to eat out of other dogs bowls if she can.
Obedience
Ruby has great recall off lead when at the oval. She knows how to sit, and is mastering waiting for food . She is being taught to wait at the door and not rush out for walks.
Ruby can be a little jumpy and excited at times
Independence
Ruby does like to be around people. She is fine being left with her dog pals during the day but unsure of how she would cope all day on her own. At night she sleeps separately from her dog pals and will do little whimpers but does settle and has definitely improved, doing this alot less that when she arrived
Ruby knows how to use the doggy door and is fully toilet trained
Inside the home
Ruby will make herself at home on the couch if she can
She is well behaved but being food driven will try to steal food from the kitchen bench so will need to be kept away from this area if you still want your chicken for dinner . Apparently it’s a lab thing lol
She has not shown any destructive behavior when left inside
She is a pleasure to have inside the home and we are seeking a home where she can be inside, part of the family.
Exercise
Ruby needs a daily walk as currently she needs to lose a few kg. Ruby Roo looks forward to her sniff of the neighborhood to read the daily news. Ruby can pull when first leaves the house but then will settle down into more of an amble. She will need a reasonably strong handler for those odd times she does pull.
Ruby can get a bit panty on warm days and with intense running
Hygiene
Ruby will develop a winter coat so will need regular brushing which she loves. She has a beautiful chocolate shiny coat with a tale that looks like it has been dipped in a lighter chocolate. Ruby enjoys her bath and rub a dub dub
Ruby is fully toilet trained and uses the doggy door as needed
Car Travel
Ruby is fond of going for a ride and eagerly hops into the car. She travels well, secured in the back seat

Food
Ruby is dry food twice a day. Ruby is a little overweight so her néw family needs to be committed to continuing her weight loss journey to keep her healthy. Ruby enjoys carrots/ kale or cow hooves as a treat. She is not given any other high calorie treats throughout the day
Being food driven she can grab food when hand fed, we are working on gentle
Sleeping
Ruby would love to sleep in the same room as her people but currently is sleeping outside the bedroom door on her bed as she is a bit of a snorer. She does have a little whine but it’s settling quicker as time goes on
Medical
Ruby has been diagnosed with an Elongated soft palate that the vets feel with weight loss will cause her no issues She is currently overweight at 38 kilos and needs to lose 4-5

Ideal home
Ruby requires a good size yard with grass to run and play

Secure fencing, shade and shelter is a must with outside inside access

Another dog would be lovely and we seek a male of similar size who very well socialized with other dogs and gentle but playful.

A home that will careful monitor her food theft from the kitchen benches lol

A home that have children of mature age who are kind and loving and dog experienced

A home that can exercise her daily to help shed the excess pounds.

We have not tested her with cats so a not cat home
A home that if ( and we don't know if she will be unsettled againfor a few days but just incase ) Ruby has another mini meltdown when moving homes who are prepared to settle her in as carer will advise
