Despite her small stature, Quest is a lot of puppy attitude! At the end of the day, she is a shepherd puppy and she certainly acts like it. Quest shows many shepherd behaviours - from occasionally barking at strangers, using her mouth for EVERYTHING, and being very stubborn and independent.
Of course, this little people pleaser has plenty of good traits too! She has already perfected a heel, listens to her handler almost to a fault, and is very food motivated. She has the drive to work and is a candidate for some great dog sports such as agility or obedience. If not, she would really benefit from dog training classes on the weekend. At the very least, she needs a knowledgeable handler and puppy school.
Quest would do fine with or without another dog, though ideally she would like another large breed active companion if there was another in the home - she can be a bit forward for some of the smaller dogs. At this stage while she has not met a cat or livestock, she shows limited prey drive so would likely be fine with proper introductions. She is living with four other dogs of various sizes and is happy to play, but also takes herself off to have alone time. She has a very good off switch.
Quest is not a cuddle bug by any stretch - though she gets excited to see her people, she is quite happy to play by herself with her toys or the other dogs. Getting her to have a nap on the couch is not something she finds fun at this stage! Even if you pick her up she wiggles like a noodle until you set her back down. This may change, but at this stage she is an independent little girl!
Quest needs some work on containment - at the moment, while she loves her crate and chooses to sleep there most nights, she does NOT do well with the door shut - the same goes for puppy pens. However, she is absolutely fine if left outside or inside, and is not at this stage destructive or over the top. Ideally her new home will have a crate for her, as this has been her space since very young and she knows where to take herself for quiet time. She is getting much better at toilet training, mostly going outside for #2, still working on #1 - we are still a puppy after all!
Please note- Quest is NOT suitable for a first time dog owner. She is a breed who needs a very balanced trainer, as she is extremely sensitive to corrections, but can become unruly if left to her own devices. She will not be rehomed to anyone without large, active dog experience. She also may be a bit much for young children with her puppy needle teeth!
If you're up for the challenge, Quest may be the firecracker for you!
